I liked it I too. I thought it could have been a little more explicit about what those creatures were. The film maker said the big monster was based on Cthulu but not if they were great old ones or elder Gods.

i actually usually like when they dont explain these huge monsters sometimes, because i feel it leaves it open for sequels/world building.
i cant stand that ol cliche "military experiment gone wrong" shyt.
which to me is almost as lazy as not explaining the monsters at all.

I think these creatures were actually always around and were in the deepest part of the ocean but were disturbed by the drilling .
