I said The Thing was purely a horror movie! You’re assigning attributes to this one movie that doesn’t apply to all. Horror can include sci fi but sci fi is not horror, if that makes sense. Would you consider Cloverfield sci fi?? No . Just like Godzilla or Pacific Rim is not classified as horror. Any movie that takes place in outer space is sci fi. Let’s not confuse the issue by bringing horror-com into this bc that’s a different discussion.
The distinction is that The Thing was unknown throughout the course of the movie - no one knew what “the thing” was bc it morphed and formed into humans and other creatures. Alien - the setting was strictly in outer space , we knew out the gate that it was an alien being. That movie didn’t take place on earth - when we think of horror we think, earth as the setting, and paranormal, psychological, evil beings manifested not of this Earthly world, but the setting is not in another planet or in outer space.
Cloverfield is sci-fi/horror. Thats what any alien monster is.
The audience knew from the opening of the movie it was an alien. The characters figured it out but their ignorance doesn't change what the movie is...namemy a sci-fi/horror movie.
