Alright yall, I gave this one a watch and it was a pleasant surprise. I don't get why some heads found the ending confusing because I think they did a good job of peppering in hints all movie long, but won't go too deep on that. Anyway, it's about a struggling actor who winds up getting a chance to be a star but as a mascot for a stuffed toy. The toy's conceit is that when kids say something it'll randomly record and play that comment back either in a nice way or in a devilish sounding naughty voice. That takes on new meaning when the actor keeps having nightmares where he dresses up as the toy and the "naughty" side takes over causing him to do some heinous things and of course; he's getting hints that he really did do that stuff but also signs that he's just having bad dreams. The whole movie takes on a pretty good "dream" vibe and plays up the question of what's really going on and whether or not the man is losing his mind under the stress of his new lifestyle or if other forces are at work. It plays mysterious and psychological well but never all that scary. It's more or less a fun horror movie with a "figure out the ending" approach that's pretty well earned but the "scare" part is missing. Horror fans ought to appreciate it and I'd also throw it in as a suggestion for fans of black mirror on Netflix, it didn't have the technology vibe really but the Black Mirror style of storytelling overall feels similar to this.
And then we get a movie that I'd also put under the "good horror but not scary" category. The trailer's above and giving away too much of something like this is always problematic, so I won't. All I'll say is that the movie puts characters into tense and sometimes horrific situations that'll have you on the edge of your seat. They manage to score high tension without you being able to hate many character decisions by putting together a threat that forces characters to move blindfolded or otherwise not looking...and it's not really forced. The characters have to make decisions at times where you'll understand the different stances people have and motivations...for the most part at least. It's tension is mainly action and thriller style rather than classic scares but it's a fun ride regardless. I definitely enjoyed it and would suggest it.
Anyone watch New Year, New You on Hulu? It's part of the Into the Dark series of holiday horror movies.
It was Ok (thought the characters were incredibly thin which was a bit of an issue since the cast was mainly just four women) but I found a certain problematic aspect to it that I think would have gotten a far less positive response from reviewers if the director wasn't a woman. Would be curious to see if anyone else who saw it had the same issue.
