Watched "Pontypool"....:ld:

The first hour or so is one of the best set ups in horror history. After they introduce a new character (no spoilers, it's a doctor) the movie dives off a cliff into wackness. It almost seems like they had two different people write the movie....that character didn't fit at all with what came before it and even ignoring that when the movie tries to explain what's been going on....:francis:

Horror writers need to remember the old Lovecraft quote about fear of the unknown being the strongest type of fear....horror is the only genre where it's sometimes best not to explain or overthink things and people still somehow drop the ball.

Rank these flicks in the order of how much I enjoyed them:

Summer of 84
Not what I was expecting especially down the home stretch of the movie

The Domestics
Really good personal drama mixed with Road Warrior style post-apocalyptic mayhem

What Still Remains
This one was like that Red Machete short series that The Walking Dead aired during commercials only this movie was actually good

Victor Crowley
Aside from the 2nd movie the Hatchet series has been really good old-fashioned mindless horror fun

Dead Night
Barbara Crampton was good and there were decent moments in the movie but this shyt was just confusing; nothing that went on made a lick of sense

Blood Fest
Could have been great but ended up just being mediocre

Watched "Hereditary".

I....liked it. It was well made and if you asked me about any specific complaints I don't really have any.

I dunno, I'm starting to notice as I get older supernatural horror movies don't do much for me. During the movie they used magic (or whatever) to orchestrate an accident, set someone on fire, cause another person to cut their own head off, etc.

When something is that powerful it's not scary to me. It's like you gotta call in the X-Men or Avengers or some shyt to fight it.

Yeah.
That was definitely a Doctor Strange situation right there.

Honestly, i wanna see more slasher type films being made.
I seen someone mention Victor Crawley.
I like silly shyt like that.
Plus they gotta bring the homie Leslie Vernon back.

I wanna listen to radio play of this ish. Not sure which version came out first, but I could see shoehorning in the explanations feeling more necessary for a radio version where everything is basically exposition.

I threw on Dig Two Graves looking for a horror movie to add some thoughts on but...it's not really a horror movie. It's a mystery and thriller that coulda totally been like the Korean Revenge plots had they changed some roles around. It's a good movie and does play on paternal fears a bit as well as trying to run from your past; but it's not scary and doesn't even seem to try to be. It's just a good old fashioned thriller imo. So positive review but just not a horror...I only say this since I was caught expecting a more horror based plot.

Sidenote: Since I don't have any horror movies to add, I'll shout out a different medium that horror head might sleep on. Junji Ito's the Enigma of Amigara Fault is Lovecraftian horror with a Japanese twist. Since it's manga, his work is easier to overlook than Lovecraftian authors like my guy Ligotti. Amigara Fault is short enough that you can read in fifteen minutes and I really think it nails the "unknown powers" aspects that Lovecraft mastered (oh there's a Carpenter level body horror in a lot of his ish too). It's short, sweet and chilling fam. So if you're needing a horror fix and never tried manga; take a shot on this ish.
