Finally watched Hereditary...Opening half hour had me annoyed with some of the dumb decision-making but from there the grief and inherited family trait stuff made for a really great psychological horror where you don't know if it's a haunting, hallucinations or psychotic breakdowns driving the things that happen. The way they keep you wondering what's real is bananas too; I kept catching things in the background that weren't jump scares in waiting or even acknowledged...just additions to that lurking feeling. Then the ending was able to tie everything together, and I mean all of it. You can even forgive some of the opening stupidity. There's still some need to reserve disbelief to get from A to Z, but their solution really helps bury most of that imo because so much is linked together perfectly.

I'd guess the initial reactions of hate were because 1) it's a slow movie; 2) it's not a jump scare movie, it's a LOT of slow building tension instead; 3) It's made for two watch throughs (or more) to fully catch all the bread crumbs they left you.

For heads that would frequent a thread like this, it's gonna be worth it. It's a long one but the build up is great and the plot is really connected well. I think they slipped in enough visceral nastiness to get through the slower bits and the thing is that most of those slower bits are low key feeding you background that helps make sense of the insanity that takes over for the entire final act. The grief motif is familiar; the fact that you can't run away from your past is money (be it due to genetics or emotional damage)...I'm a HUGE fan out the gate on this ish.

Not sure if this movie counts specifically as horror, but it was disturbing af to me. Hostiles - (Netflix) with Christian Bale. Thought it would be another formulaic western/thriller.. nope, not at all; has some horror plot elements and unexpected sequences.

I need some body horror in my life. Gonna give The Fly (1986) a watch tomorrow to get a dose of that dread I've been missing out on.

Perkins’ 14 (2009)

Unfortunately not streaming anywhere that I can see, but you can buy it for $6 on iTunes or rent it for 4. If you can find the After Dark Horrorfest 3 dvd set, it’s on there, and it’ll probably only be a couple bucks.

This guy kidnaps 14 kids, and years later, they escape as sort of zombie, killing machines. Super low budget, but really well done. A couple absolutely brutal parts. Definitely worth a buy for $6.

:deadmanny:Lol... blame my father and older brothers for putting me onto horror, why they would let a 7yr old little girl (at the time when I saw my first one) watch these types of movie with them is beyond me...Now, this is what happens, horror movie fangirl. But I like what I like..
