We recently watched 'Abigail' as it's up on Peacock now. It's a fun little
vampire
flick but I will say I felt it could have done without some of the wack one liners and comedic attempts. I don't mind some humor to the horror genre, in fact, sometimes I encourage it. There's a time and a place but these jokes were just poorly written most of the time. Regardless, the action is pretty solid and I liked the little girl actress, she played her role well. It's always nice seeing Melissa Barrera, she's fine as hell and has become quite a scream queen in recent years. Too bad they did her dirty in the 'Scream' franchise. Also, R.I.P. to Angus Cloud. Seemed like a good Bay Area dude, I wonder if this was the last thing he acted in.

Lucky Day was the last film he did, but Abigail came out later.

Tonight we watched 'Smile' in preparation for the sequel. I had already seen it myself but I did not mind the rewatch. I think we'll see the sequel sometime next week. I still think this is a great movie. In fact, it's one of my favorite franchise horrors in a while. I love that they played it completely straight with no comedy, no tongue in cheek elements. Sosie Bacon acted her ass off. The rest of the cast was decent as well. The tension is high. I can't wait to see what they got cooked up for part 2.

'Pearl' is an excellent horror flick that doubles as a great little character study. I don't want to spoil anything but let me just say the movie's descent into madness is paced incredibly well and I loved the way this was shot. It's bringing a vibrant almost Disney-like color palette to an extremely dark and disturbing story. It's very unsettling. You start to notice little things early on and it just builds and builds from there.

One question: Is Mia Goth an underrated actress at this point? I would have to say yes. There are a few scenes in this that are, no exaggeration, award-worthy. The Oscars doesn't typically reward this genre with a few exceptions but they should. There's one scene, appeared to be a long shot, where Mia Goth is simply incredible. I had already seen 'X' which I thought was decent, this was even better. I will watch 'MaXXXine' soon.

Horror thread's 31 days of Halloween List - Day 19 - Brain Damage 1988
One morning, a young man wakes to find that a small, disgusting creature has attached itself to the base of his brain stem. The creature gives him a euphoric state of happiness but demands human victims in return.

I place this movie somewhere between Killer Clowns from Outer Space and Basket Case. It's crazy and gory, with great practical effects like Basket Case. But it's a bit more goofy in execution, like Killer Clowns. Special shouts out to the old couple acting completely unhinged all movie long.

There's a certain comedic, campy tone that's all over the 80's horror movies. It vanishes as the 90s unfold, and I don't think it's been recaptured since. This joint's fun...it'd make a hell of a double-feature next to Society.

The List:
1. Triangle (Prime)
2. The Loved Ones (Paramount+)
3. Salem's Lot 2024 (Max)
4. Be My Cat: A Film for Anne (Tubi)
5. VHS Beyond (Shudder)
6. *Choose your own* - Haunt (2019)
7. Don't Go in the House (Tubi, Youtube)
8. Cure (Internet Archive)
9. Masque of the Red Death(Pluto/Apple TV+)
10. The Eyes of My Mother (Max)
11. Henry Portait of a Serial Killer (Peacock)
12. Curse of Chucky (Netflix)
13. *Choose your own*
14. Junk (2000) (Youtube)
15. Detention (2011) (Tubi)
16. Sleepaway Camp (Peacock)
17. The Skeleton Key(Peacock/Apple TV+)
18. The Witch (Max)
19. Brain Damage 1988 (Tubi)

20. *Choose your own*
21. Audition (Tubi)
22. J. D.'s Revenge(Tubi/Brown Sugar/Prime)
23. Dead Silence (Tubi)
24. Sinister (Max)
25. World War Z (Paramount Plus)
26. The Burbs (Youtube)
27. *Choose your own*
28. 28 Days Later
29. Black Christmas (Tubi)
30. The Shining(MAX/Apple TV+)
31. John Carpenter's Halloween

Next up, I picked Thesis, which is the second time this year that a foreign 90's horror has caught me completely off guard (Cure being the first).

Horror thread's 31 days of Halloween List - Day 20 - Thesis (1996)
While doing a thesis about violence, Ángela finds a snuff video where a girl is tortured until death. Soon she discovers that the girl was a former student in her faculty...

Talk about a hidden gem, I was completely gripped by the first two-thirds of this movie. The mystery is great, the MCs have a bizarre chemistry, and the tension is through the roof for certain scenes. It kinda loses steam thanks to some seriously bad decision-making by characters, but it wouldn't be a 90's movie otherwise.

The score is also extremely 90's and a bit of a weakpoint to me. But otherwise, this movie is pretty damned good. I'll definitely be bringing it up and suggesting it to people often, because I'd never heard of it but wound up impressed.

The List:
1. Triangle (Prime)
