We recently watched 'Abigail' as it's up on Peacock now. It's a fun littleflick but I will say I felt it could have done without some of the wack one liners and comedic attempts. I don't mind some humor to the horror genre, in fact, sometimes I encourage it. There's a time and a place but these jokes were just poorly written most of the time. Regardless, the action is pretty solid and I liked the little girl actress, she played her role well. It's always nice seeing Melissa Barrera, she's fine as hell and has become quite a scream queen in recent years. Too bad they did her dirty in the 'Scream' franchise. Also, R.I.P. to Angus Cloud. Seemed like a good Bay Area dude, I wonder if this was the last thing he acted in.vampire
'Pearl' is an excellent horror flick that doubles as a great little character study. I don't want to spoil anything but let me just say the movie's descent into madness is paced incredibly well and I loved the way this was shot. It's bringing a vibrant almost Disney-like color palette to an extremely dark and disturbing story. It's very unsettling. You start to notice little things early on and it just builds and builds from there.
One question: Is Mia Goth an underrated actress at this point? I would have to say yes. There are a few scenes in this that are, no exaggeration, award-worthy. The Oscars doesn't typically reward this genre with a few exceptions but they should. There's one scene, appeared to be a long shot, where Mia Goth is simply incredible. I had already seen 'X' which I thought was decent, this was even better. I will watch 'MaXXXine' soon.
