underrated 80's sci fi horror

Harry Manfredini on the 1's & 2's so it sounds like an early Friday the 13th flick, which sounded like Psycho.

Still on my 1980's kick

Late Night With the Devil:lupe:

....great premise that somehow fell apart:ld:

I did like the 70s late-night aura, Bohemian Grove tie-in. and when demon girl HADOUKEN the set:ehh:
How I felt about it too, but that journey is A-1.:ohlawd:

Lily (the demon girl) came across like a Lovecraftian deity in the end. I was not prepared for any of that, lol. Loved how chaotic that massacre sequence got.

Man that was one of my favorite parts. The movie was perfect to me. The backstage paranoia was great.

I was gonna recommend Deadstream (2022) because while that has some semblance of gore, it’s not mindless like the type of stuff we’d see in the Terrifier franchise. It’s a sampler of cheesy, practical effects compared to the full-on entree when Art goes on a murder spree. Honestly, one of the safest R-rated films I’ve watched over the last few years, and funny as fukk.

That was really good. I don't think there are many gore-less horror films this year. Didn't see Immaculate yet so I can't say for certain.

Asking for a gore-less horror film is asking for a fun run without the fun.

So I peeped Abigail and Late Night with the Devil this weekend, and really enjoyed both. I classify them both as "fun" watches, rather than the really scary or disturbing stuff. But that's just fine. In my opinion, the top three for this year so far are Immaculate, Late Night, and Abigail by a comfortable margin.

Late Night with the Devil
Late Night with the Devil really captures that old-school late-night vibe while looping in some Satanic Panic energy. I like that they paid homage to the Amazing Randi with the skeptic character, although they didn't have to make him such an a$$hole. I REALLY appreciate the documentary approach to found footage horror, which this nails.

My warnings for newcomers are that it takes a while to get going and ends on a fairly common trope. But neither of those issues is bad enough to take away from how well this simple narrative works. It has a great dose of comedy and a campy atmosphere but still hits with some nice practical effects and creepy implications.

The lead roles are performed really well, especially the creepy girl who stares into the cameras randomly and uses a "not quite natural" tone for a young girl...it works perfectly. There's a fantastic hypnosis scene that gives us leeway to play with some theories about the ending too, which is nice for the "theory" folks out there.
I've seen some people compare it to a VHS segment that runs full-length, and that's perfect. I'd just throw in that it's one of the GOOD segments.

Abigail
Abigail feels like a spiritual successor to Ready or Not. It has the same rich mixture of fun characters, comic relief, and brutal gore. There were multiple scenes where the audience let out audible gasps at the nastiness but quickly shifted to laughing at how over-the-top the gore was.

The plot never tries to do too much. It lets the interesting characters and premise handle the heavy lifting. Melissa Barrera is lightyears better here than she was in the Scream films IMO, but a lot of that is just having more to work with.

On the downside, the simplicity has its drawbacks. I called out the order of deaths as soon as the personalities were established (and only mixed up the order on two characters). Some decisions feel plot-convenient, but not enough to take me out. It also runs just a smidgeon longer than it probably had to. But it's the most fun I've had with a theater experience in a long time, and the entire audience was drawn into it. I haven't seen a film engage the audience with audible reactions like this since Smile and Barbarian's opening weekends (albeit, for different reasons in all three cases).

Because I lean toward "make it scary" as a deciding factor in the quality of a horror movie, my top picks so far this year would breakdown to
1. Immaculate
2. Late Night with the Devil
3. Abigail
4. You'll Never Find Me
5. Double-Blind

But I'll throw in that nothing has really blown me away yet. Last year, I left the theater from watching Talk to Me, and couldn't get it out of my head for a week. New Religion had a similar impact. I HAD to share those flicks with other people, as soon as I left the movies. I haven't felt that about anything to drop this year.

Granted, I'ma rewatch those top-three soon, and there haven't been any "Skinamarink" overhyped let downs...but I'm still waiting for a "WOW" movie of 2024.
