Speaking of "is this overhyped" ...I've seen a handful of reactions to a horror movie that I heard no mention of prior. They're coming in from tik tok and twitter horror accounts, which I tend to be skeptical of...but this is one account that I generally find to have authentic and good takes:
Everyone's saying to go in blind. I'm gonna try to find it and make time for a watch. The cryptic-ness of the reviews so far reminds me of the Outwaters and Skinamarink...I hated both.

@storyteller Curious on what you think of ‘The First Omen’ when you watch it. That’s my #1 horror so far. Really looking forward to July though because between ‘Longlegs’ and ‘Maxxxine’, my expectations are pretty high. Marketing has certainly played a role, but it’s mainly because of the directors helming those projects. I think they will deliver.

I'm really hype for Longlegs and Maxxxine as well. I've heard a lot of hype for The First Omen, so I'm definitely gonna make an effort to check it out. I'm kinda sad I didn't hear hype sooner, because I'd have tried to get the "opening night" theater experience.
I watched a 2011 Found Footage film out of Australia that had some hype called The Tunnel, it's on Shudder for anyone interested.
Anyway, I didn't love it. But after discovering that it was crowd-funded, I don't want to be too harsh. It's not bad, but it feels dated even for 2011, and the limitations are understandable but tough to ignore. That said, it has some great moments and a cult following that makes it worth watching for found footage heads.
Plotwise, it's nothing new. A reporter is fighting for relevance and stumbles on the story of people going missing in a system of tunnels. She interviews a homeless man who stays in the tunnels, and after he has a meltdown, she realizes that this could be her big break...It's a lot like the Rat Ma sketch from VHS in its premise but without the humor.
The movie is clearly inspired by the Blair Witch Project, trying to create a bit of lore and doing crowd interviews before getting into the heart of the found footage horror. It also does the "documentary" thing where they interview characters about the events that transpired...but that kinda backfires because it tells you who lives and gives you a sense of who probably isn't making it out of the tunnel.
A chunk of the scares relies on shaky cam and "hard to see" darkness...aka, stuff that got left behind a while ago because it's never great. But it probably helped them make the movie with a limited budget and experience. More importantly, a couple of scare beats land really well by relying on audio or slowing down and using night vision to obscure the creature but show its behavior.
The bell scene is great once they add in the audio, and the creature actively gouging at and eating a victim is some visceral stuff. Those two shots are great! Unfortunately, not much else feels original or exciting tbh.
A lot of the characters are pretty flat. The creature physics didn't make a lot of sense to me. And overall, I think this fails to stand out when we've had so much great found footage over the years. So, it lands in a very mid place. I rate it 6/10....Found footage fans; check it out. Everyone else might want to try something else.
