Netflix coulda turned Sandman into a genuinely good horror, but they went quirky instead of dark too often. They made the main character one of the least charismatic leads ever. But there are a lot of genuinely cool and interesting side characters that keep it interesting. They shoulda really tried to make this shyt scary though.

You ever see Coli posters say “man, you have to see that movie in theaters to fully enjoy the moment,” or “everyone was giving it a standing ovation” :usure:

I feel like posters say this too much

And the reason why I’m bringing this up is because people were applying this to The Black Phone. I get it’s a different experience but dudes apply this to damn near everything. How bout actually finding stuff from the film to prove why you like it so much lol.

I digress. Decent thriller that I can see with a lot of replay value for a lot of people as the years go on. I can see horror heads respecting the film for what it is while having elements that attracts people who don’t like digesting horror films. A family looking to watch a “scary movie” could watch this together. There’s not that much gore, any nudity at all or strange and weird shyt that we like.

My biggest pro for the movie is we’re barely given any information about about the guy with the mask. He’s just there to be a villain and I enjoy that. I feel like films try to over-explain and overexpose villains. The guy kidnaps kids and murders them. I don’t need a history on the guy being beat by his parents or to be told he’s off his meds lol.

Like someone said the film might be overhyped. I still dig the film for what is is.

I also saw X. Another decent film with high replay value specifically for horror heads. I can see this as a film you’ve put on for the 15th time to enjoy while stoned lol.

The plot is unique and original. The cast is amazing imo. I’m torn though. I think the old couple is cheesy but I also enjoy their motivation and the message that it’s hard to accept aging.

I also like seeing Kid Cudi in horror films. I feel like he has a home in this world if he wants too.
And boy there’s something about Mia Goth.

Decent watches

"With Cabinet of Curiosities, we set out to showcase the realities existing outside of our normal world: the anomalies and curiosities. We hand-picked and curated a group of stories and storytellers to deliver these tales, whether they come from outer space, supernatural lore, or simply within our minds," del Toro said of the upcoming series. "Just in time for Halloween, each of these eight tales is a fantastical peek inside the cabinet of delights existing underneath the reality we live in."

Director List

Jennifer Kent (The Babadook, The Nightingale)

Vincenzo Natali (Cube, Splice)

Cosmos Panatos (Mandy, Beyond The Black Rainbow)

David Prior (The Empty Man)

Ana Lily Amirpour (A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night)

Tubi got a GANG of found-footage horror. A lot of it is recent and I’ve never heard of, which means there’s a good chance for schlock. But I see some personal favs like banshee chapter and hell house llc have arrived also, so ima give some of the rest a look.

Side note: butterfly kisses is also up, which I hated but will never forget because of the ridiculous way you summon the ghost (stare down a tunnel without blinking for an impossibly long amount of time).

The comic book always straddled the line into dark fantasy more than horror so I got pretty much what I was expecting from it. I liked it though.

I totally get your feeling about seeing something that is super-hyped up only for it to not come close to the expectations you had for it. I also tend to not enjoy a lot of the recent horror films that get critically lauded as being "good horror". I am not a fan of The Babadook, Midsommar, The Witch and Creep which all were heralded as such great horror movies and they left me flat.
As for the Black Phone, I liked it a lot but never hyped it up as being the masterpiece that a lot of people were pushing it as.
I think the drought of good wide release in theater horror probably played a lot into why Black Phone and X (which I really enjoyed) are as loved as they have been by horror fans.

Gone In The Night
Upon arriving at a remote cabin in the redwoods, Kath (Winona Ryder) and her boyfriend (John Gallagher Jr.) find a mysterious young couple (Owen Teague and Brianne Tju) already there--the rental has apparently been double-booked. They decide to share the cabin with these strangers. When her boyfriend mysteriously disappears with the young woman, Kath becomes obsessed and enlists an unlikely supporter (Dermot Mulroney) with finding an explanation for their sudden breakup--but the truth is far stranger than she could have ever imagined.

Gone in the Night was OK. Not something I would ever feel the need to watch again but it was decent and the mystery was well done because I had no clue what the hell happed to Winona Ryder's boyfriend for most of the movie.
I was a bit distracted though because I assumed the reason Ryder wore those big dumbo orthopedic looking shoes on Stranger Things was because it was the 1980s and everyone dressed terribly in the 1980s but she was wearing similar shoes in this movie which means she either has some abnormally large feet or she has some kind of medical issues with her feet that require special shoes.
But yeah that was what was holding my attention through most of this movie: Winona Ryder's goofy ass shoes.

That series bored me - I fell asleep multiple times off Sandman, it’s a chore to watch; one of those cases where the trailer came across much more scarier and horror intensive than the actual show. No lead character development at all - they put all the resources into CGI but slack off into investing in the role portrayals. They might as well rename this Slytherin and have Dobby make a guest appearance. 😒

Netflix releases these days is like having a cupcake with too much frosting - it looks good upon the initial presentation but then you start to taste it, realizing you have to get through all the layers of frosting - finally when you do reach the cake, it’s not that flavorful and it starts to crumble - all that you’re left with is a sugar headache, thirst and dissatisfaction bc the creators focused on appearance and not the ingredients. Then they add all that unnecessary agenda ish into the mix which is like adding whipped cream on top of the frosting.. Like why add that extra unnecessary scoop to an already excessive presentation when they haven’t perfected the batter?🤮😠

Event Horizon came out 25 years ago today so I watched it to commemorate the occasion and while some of the effects have not aged well the movie itself still holds up remarkably well.
I am really glad that the movie has had a cult following over the years and people are recognizing it for the horror gem that it has always been.
