The Forgotten John Carpenter Film That Inspired James Wan's Malignant

A long-forgotten John Carpenter movie from the late 1970s served as inspiration for filmmaker James Wanwhen creating Malignant. Though many predicted the movie was based on Wan's graphic novel Malignant Man, the film was an original tale written alongside Ingrid Bisu and Akela Cooper. That said, the story about a woman experiencing deadly visions paid tribute to existing horror titles.

Following the release of Malignant, there have been discussions of how the movie's cinematography and tone match that of an Italian Giallo, a subgenre for thrillers and mystery fiction. That was certainly the goal of Wan, considering he has widely shared how the latest horror title is a tribute to Italian filmmaker greats like Dario Argento and the Bava family in addition to other trailblazers like Brian De Palma and David Cronenberg. When crafting Malignant, Wan specifically looked at lesser-known indie titles and movies that were forgotten by the general public, including John Carpenter's Eyes of Laura Mars from 1978. The movie, which Irvin Kershner directed, starred big-name actors like Faye Dunaway and Tommy Lee Jones, but it came and went after a lukewarm reception from critics. Granted, Eyes of Laura Mars had the staying power with Wan as he used it as a direct inspiration for Malignant.

Wan described how Carpenter's Eyes of Laura Mars stuck with him when he tackled Malignant: "One of the things I wanted to do was hark back to… there was a particular style of late-Eighties and early-Nineties serial killer stories. It’s that subgenre where you follow the victim or the main character, and you follow them through the eyes of the murderer." Evidently, Eyes of Laura Mars' plot point in focusing on a woman who can see through the eyes of a killer led to Maddie's initial connection to Gabriel's killings in Malignant. Considering Eyes of Laura Mars was also viewed as an American take on Italian Giallo, it made sense why Wan would draw inspiration from the cult title.

Even though Eyes of Laura Mars may be forgotten especially when compared to Carpenter's other 1978 film, Halloween, Wan's Malignant is certainly making an effort to resurrect the American version of the Giallo subgenre. Interestingly enough, Carpenter attempted to bring back an aspect of the 1978 movie through 1998's Vampires. Carpenter directed the neo-noir horror film, which included a psychic link between a woman and the master vampire in a similar fashion to the women's connection to killers in Eyes of Laura Mars and Malignant.
:ohhh:
I haven’t seen this Laura Mars movie

Malignant 2's Biggest Hurdle Is Not Repeating The Same Twist

in an interview with GamesRadar.com, Wan was not against the idea of turning Malignant into a franchise but also said that was not his intention. He also made it clear that the decision was up to the studio, not to him.

“It’s kind of a tricky question,” he said. “Ultimately anything can become a franchise. They will find a way. Look at Saw. When Leigh Whannell and I made Saw, we were like, ‘Jigsaw gets up and he shuts the door. The end.’ Then when the movie did so well, the producers and studio were like, ‘Guys, we have to make another one.’” He concluded, “So, yes,Malignant could become a franchise. But I set out to just make this movie.”

Whether or not Warner Bros. decides to turn Malignant into a franchise likely depends on how well the film does in theaters and on HBO Max. We’ll just have to wait and see!

I’m calling it now. There will be a Malignant 2. It performed beyond expectations

Paranormal Activity 7 will be a Reboot with a Paramount+ release

Jason Blum Reveals ‘Paranormal Activity 7’ Is Already Finished; Explains Why It Had to Be a Reboot
More than a decade after the film arrived in theaters and helped spark the found-footage trend that dominated the late 2000s, Paranormal Activity is getting a reboot. But the 2007 film didn’t just inspire a new horror trend, it was also the movie that helped launch Blumhouse, the production studio that has become one of the most dominant force in horror filmmaking in the years since. With the upcoming Paranormal Activity 7, it appropriately marks the first time Blumhouse is fully rebooting a piece of their original IP. And it turns out, the movie is already done.

Initial reports had the film pegged to a March 2022 release date, but ViacomCBS CEO Bob Bakishrecently revealed that the film is set to premiere on the streaming service Paramount+ by the end of 2021.

Plot details are still being closely guarded, but Blum did have some things to say about taking the franchise in a new direction. Directed Will Eubank (Underwater), the new Paranormal Activity movie has a script by Freaky and Happy Death Day filmmaker Christopher Landon, who previously penned four of the Paranormal Activity sequels from Paranormal Activity 2through Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones. But that doesn’t mean you should expect a familiar take, because Blum also made it clear that the only way he wanted to bring back the franchise was by doing something new with it.

“Paramount wanted to continue Paranormal Activity, I probably would have left it alone. So they wanted to continue it, but I thought if they were gonna continue it, you gotta - it was tired, there was no way to continue the road that we’d been down.

So I really encouraged all the creative people involved to think of something new

I haven't seen The Eyes of Laura Mars in a while but I enjoyed it.
Its about a controversial fashion photographer (played by Fay Dunaway) who begins to see visions from the perspective of a serial killer killing people she knows. She starts working with a police detective (played by Tommy Lee Jones) to find out who the killer is before the killer comes for her.

I'm glad they decided to do something new with the Paranormal Activity franchise because it had stopped being all that interesting to me.

I'm glad they decided to do something new with the Paranormal Activity franchise because it had stopped being all that interesting to me.
I watched the later sequels because they wore the “paranormal activity” banner not so much bc of interest in the storyline itself; I just wanted to see how they would spin it. PA - the Marked Ones was okay, bc it diverged a bit from the original plots. But same here, agree with you, the reboot will refresh the franchise. As long as they don’t go the latest “Saw” and “Purge” franchise route which goes off base with it to completely miss the mark. Blum still has creative control so looking forward to see what he does - I hope he’s not trying to cater to nonhorror fans with the direct to streaming route like I’ve seen lately. He needs to stick to Wan’s formula i.e. the Malignant route, he was like “f the mainstream! hardcore horror core fan base will like and appreciate” this so that’s the only feedback he cared about; and it worked for us- we appreciated it for what it was.

Side note - can’t believe it’s been 14 YEARS since the original PA. 1-4!! It’s almost like growing up with Blumhouse movies - (I’m older than y’all but in terms of early 2000s being the defining era for me as far as setting the stage for found footage, paranormal, psychological movies and witnessing turning points in the genre).

Reading through this timeline brought back memories.

“Throughout the franchise, various video cameras are used to give a candid experience of supernatural phenomenon and it crows increasingly violent. Paranormal Activity assisted in popularizing the found footage genre of horror films in the 2000s and 2010s. With others such as As Above, So Below (2014) and V/H/S (2012), the Blumhouse Productions franchise continues to prove to be one of their most popular and profitable franchises.”

“Blumhouse is responsible for some of the greatest franchises in horror today such as Insidious (2010), but Paranormal Activity set them on a path towards becoming an iconic production company in the genre. It was the first horror film they produced and it was successfully distributed by Paramount Pictures. Paranormal Activity was the first franchise Blumhouse Productionsestablished for their company and with all of its success, they produced nearly fifteen years of found footage films”

@Jello Biafra this is what I mean- ^^^ and these subgenres still haven’t peaked. Which is a good thing.

The crazy thing about Paranormal Activity is that it really does hold the title for being the kick starter for the "found footage" horror movement even though The Blair Witch Project was an even bigger success at the box office yet didn't end up creating a found footage horror movie cottage industry like how PA did.

Think about the gap between Blair Witch's release in 1999 and Paranormal Activity's release in 2007 and then look at the explosion of found footage that came after PA. Movies like Cloverfield, REC, Chronicle etc.
