Fear Street 1978 took me a bit to get through just because of some distractions in the real world. That had me watching it in installments. I remember being a little bit underwhelmed at the opening when I watched, to the extent that I was feeling like I'd lean toward the first installment ('94). But the second and third sitdowns for me were essentially getting right into the action...and the action is really good.
I linger on stakes and threats when I talk this horror ish. If I'm certain a character will survive, then the tension doesn't land and the scares don't hit. '94 had too many occasions where a character was dead to rights but the slasher would push them over to go after someone else. It felt inconsistent and kinda took away from the threat until the latter portion of the movie where there were some really gnarly kills that boosted everything. '78 though...the bodycount is crazy and characters (for the most part) don't get away with their poor choices. Whether it's kids playing capture the flag or a counselor trying to help; if the characters make a mistake then they get the axe. I like that. There was also a bonus of being just far enough removed from watching '94 and the introduction to this one that I couldn't remember which of the main group was supposed to be the final girl (there are really only two options to be fair).
Anyway, characters did still do some dumb, plot convenient stuff. But it's more forgivable when they get murked for the foolishness at least. On the downside, '94 had more creative kills imo. But overall, both Fear Street movies have been really fun watches. They're a bit tropey but out of love for the genre. The nostalgia stuff can get overblown but it never feels like a crutch. There's a legitimate plot running through these that I'm enjoying as it unwinds. Big thumbs up.
Here's one I'd categorize as a hidden gem...mainly because it's a portion of horror that I don't usually like, but I got through this one well...Even Lambs have Teeth
So, it's exactly what it looks like. A revenge horror with a bit of torture porn mixed in and those are two subgenres of horror that I typically don't vibe with. But it has a very fast run time that allows it to avoid being too gratuitous (well...there are a couple of parts that get dangerously close) while maintaining the more entertaining aspects of a revenge film. They take around 20 minutes running a normal movie, laying some foundations for what will transpire, and then setting you up for the rest of the ride. The abduction horrors take up a shorter portion and they are DARK. But because the film flies through it and thanks to some hope that was laid out early on, it doesn't feel as overblown as some other films in this genre can get. Then the rest of the ride is straight-up revenge fantasy and you are cheering it all on.
Downside...shallow characters are a necessity to fly through the movie as quick as this goes. Everyone kinda fits into a trope with just enough backstory to make them work; but the performances are good enough that you like who you're supposed to and loath who you should hate. This is still torture and revenge porn, so expect some nasty gory stuff along the way that could be gratuitous for the squeamish. Also, be prepared to suspend disbelief in the name of enjoying the ride. Characters do some dumb ish and poor communication is a driving force for like half the plot. But still...this wound up being an enjoyable one. It has some striking kills and moves fast enough to be a quick throw-on that feeds a horror craving. It's a solid time passer.
