I've gotten some horror media to shout out...
Gave Them a try and through the first few episodes, I thought it was pretty good. But it got more and more gratuitous as it went on. I sometimes enjoy a horror movie that's mean to its characters. Most of the time the people are unlikeable or you can feel the revenge fantasy that the writer was having when they made the ish (ie: the Lodge). But this fell into trauma-torture porn the way that Monsterland did. It was a more coherent attempt at visualizing the ways racism and alienation can cause internalized trauma, but still came across forced. I thought it might be able to salvage itself with a good payoff but then the payoff...sucked. They were "in your face" about everything they did to the point of it being gross and then they didn't have the balls to give these characters an out or ending.
Then I peeped the audio book of a horror novel called We Sold Our Souls by Grady Hendrix. It's about a woman who almost got famous with her band, but the lead singer screwed them all over and blew up off the backs of their work. It's only years later that she realizes he sold his and the bands' souls to the devil literally for that success. Now he's closing loose ends by trying to kill the old members and she has to get the band back together. It's not very scary, but it's got horror motifs and a great sense of humor. I think love of music and performance comes through more than the horror, but it was a fun piece of fiction for me. I generally do non-fiction, so it was a welcome detour.
And finally, a to be continued. I watched the first Warlock on a whim and omg...it's sooo 90's. It's got pretty bad effects, over the top acting, and a plot that's nonsensical in the funnest possible ways. I'm holding off on saying more because I found the sequel on IMDB TV and I'm definitely going through that one. It's about a warlock who travels centuries into the future and a hunter that follows him. They wind up going from dark ages England to 90's Boston and the writing has no problem making jokes of the disconnect these medieval style magicians have with modern lifestyles. It's B-movie gold and I hope the sequel doesn't ruin it. I'll say more when I know.
