What was your take on the story?

The way I figured it that cult needed him to kill wantonly to fulfill some kind of ritual of theirs. Not to kill under orders or as a soldier as he had previously, but with a bloodlust like how he did that child snuff ring and the people in the woods. I got no idea to what end tho, something to do with him giving over his soul to evil?
yeah i thought the same. The entire movie was a satanic ritual. Most like to bring a demon/antichrist in the world. Throughout the whole movie all the peopke he kills are thanking him and grateful to meet him. His friend was in on it as well I believe. Also they foreshadowed the ending. Earlier when the family are playing with the toy swords the kid is on the wifes back and he stabs them with the toy swords.

The fukked up thing is they had a bunch of practical effects for the prequel, which looked great, but for some inexplicable reason switched to CGI. There's a "making of" video floating around the internet.

Regardless, the movie didn't need to get made.

CGI will never be scary. Ever. It completely takes you out of the experience.

Even though I loved The Mist the cgi is awful. But The black and white version of The Mist I loved because it covered up the look of the cgi.

Couple more:

Cold Fish- bloody Asian fukkery

Dog Tooth- German (iirc). Some might not say it's horror because of the way it's presented, but if you think about what's actually going on its pretty fukked up.

Funny Games: Only seen the original...but I liked it.

Salo - The 120 Days of Sodom: Italian. Just over the top fukkery. Only movie ever that I physically couldn't finish watching...and I've seen some pretty fukked up stuff in real life, let alone on film.

Just finished grave encounters.

It had a cool premise but I felt like the scares fell a bit flat. It was a little too cliched and Im a bit meh towards found footage at the moment. Had some cool atmosphere though and I found myself searching the screen for anything moving in the shadows which is always a good thing. I thought session 9 did a better job using the setting to its advantage.

I had to give Darabont a pass because the studio was withholding money until he changed the ending. He was like :manny: "I'll keep my ending and do it kinda low budget". So that's why it looks kinda shytty.

And yeah I love that movie.

Watched two horror movies that I'm stamping with "don't bother"

At the Devil's Door - first five minutes were promising, it was slow, senseless and not scary at all from then on out...there were a couple of nice visuals but not enough plot or tension building to make it anything more than disjointed garbage.

The Innkeeper - Had some funny moments, the director seemed like he/she knew exactly how to build tension but NEVER made the build up pay off. They tried for a "is she crazy or is this real?" type of plot I guess, but they didn't commit enough either way. The comedic bits were the best part of this. It was mostly lame, characters were dumb and the lack of payoffs to the tension building made it completely lame.
