Friend I have a sub $250 budget recommend a good hand gun for beginners.
$250 is a little low, you might only be able to get a hi-point or some other janky gun for that. if you up that budget to $275 or even $300 you can get some nice guns like the bersa thunder 380, kel-tec pf9, or the ruger lcp 380. a handgun is definitely something i wouldn't cheap out on since it's something you're planning on buying to help defend your life. but that said, even a hi-point is better than nothing.

edit: pf9 for exactly $250 :blessed: http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/cPath/21_150/products_id/411535236/Kel-Tec PF-9-GY PF-9 7+1 9mm 3.1"

I read mixed reviews on those hi-point even from the pros, some like them some hate them

Instead of an AR 15, I would recommend getting a 300 Blackout upper, and have the lower receiver put together at a local gun shop if they are in your area. Only drawback is the ammo for the 300 is expensive as hell.
:dahell: instead of an Ar15? you realize even if its chambered in 300 blk its still an ar15? Why would you even suggest 300 blk to a first time AR buyer? The ammo is more exspensive and short of ordering online is damn near impossible to find. The onky advantage 300 blk has is if you plan on suppressing it.

A 300 would be a better home defense rifle because of the weight and size of the bullet, it's basically an AR 15 with AK 47 type ammo. A suppressed sbr 300 is a beautiful machine to shoot, quieter than a suppressed 9mm, very little recoil. So I kinda agree with you, because if anyone wants to switch to 300 from .223 or 5.56, all they have to do is change the barrel. I am looking into loading my own 300 subsonic ammo, so that I'm not paying a dollar per bullet.

.223/5.56 is more than adequate to stop an intruder. Yea its just a barrel swap but hiw many people getttin their first ar are gonna be able to do that. If you want a .30 cal projectile get an AK. Practicing and being proficient in the use of your weapon is imperative. Someone with a lower end budget will not want to spend the money shooting .300 blk enough to become well versed I handling their gun. Everyones first ar should be 5.56/.223. Then maybe down the road get a .300 blk upper if you feell the .223 is lacking.
