I'm not quite sure what to tell you if you'd prefer Vallas in office to spite immigrants while fukking over black ppl :russ:

Vallas' policies will be Rauner 2.0 and will likely mess up safety nets in places for black and brown people.

If you want anti-immigration, vote for Vallas, if you want pro-black, vote for Brandon.
Yeah I think I'm rolling with Valles :mjpls:

I should’ve been more inspired to vote last week, but unfortunately I just wasn’t. Truthfully anyone I would’ve voted for wasn’t gonna make it anyway

Johnson got north and northwest but None of the south/west sides? :mjtf:

I figured Vallas was gonna be in the runoff regardless. There’s those older voters still living here that pine for anything reminiscent of a Daley/Emanuel run. Vallas is the closest to that, name recognition notwithstanding

How is this defund the police/raise taxes shyt gon help Johnson here? :patrice:

Well the hot topic in Chicago is crime right now. And Johnsons approach is to hire social workers for domestic calls, and letting the officers deal with more violent issues. But if you look at this with a fine tooth comb, the domestic issues seem to end up being violent. So instead of a person trying to attack a police officer during a domestic call, they now attacking a social worker. And on top of that, talking someone down from a mental episode may take hours, so you may need more social workers than actual police now.

So yes, mental issues need to be addressed. But to think you don't need an aggressive position on crime, that falls beyond helping people deal with mental breakdowns is foolish. You actually have people out here that really don't give a shyt. The candidate that addresses both issues should win this easily.

Personally, I don't think they should have social workers. They should have 2 divisions of police. Misdemeanors and Felony cops. Different skillsets for different issues, but still can protect others and themselves if the situation escalates.

I get having social workers because it seemingly deescalates the situation, but sometimes it may escalate the situation because the social worker really won't have any ability to force authority or a resolution.

IMO, I think that the Tyre Nichols situation showed that the 'felony cops' (aka cops 'trained' to handle tough situations) is typically a terrible idea that leads to terrible policing.

From my perspective, regardless of how you split the existing police force, at the end of the day the only approach they have is be able to lock up people when they do something wrong. If the only tool you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail.

The purpose of a social worker is to try to deescalate but also work to reach a resolution so that ideally they interact less w/ the police over time.

Somewhat related, but I think that they should be hired outside of the police force. We couldn't even trust the police review board w/ the Laquan McDonald case so I doubt social workers would be as neutral/effective if they were recruited by the CPD

This has a down side as well though because social workers can be attacked within that environment as well. Even then the police may eventually have to show up.. And I believe the social workers should reflect the community that they serve. No way you should have white recently college graduates trying to come into black communities and resolve systemic issues. Thats counter productive IMO.
