Horn: During The Fight, I Was Like 'Holy Crap, I'm Beating Pacquiao'
WBO welterweight champion Jeff Horn (17-0-1, 11 KOs) pulled off a shocking upset last month.
Even Horn himself admits he was shocked by the outcome. The 2012 Australian Olympian won a twelve round unanimous decision over eight division champion Manny Pacquiao to capture the WBO title before a crowd of 51,000 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, Australia.
“What someone does, if they show a reaction in there — you know that’s hurt them or done something to them,” Horn told The Back Page. “He smiles. When you know someone smiles when you punch them in the face, it hurt. At those times I felt like, if he wants to stand in front of me and take those punches — he can. I knew I was hurting him on the ropes. The clapping of the gloves and all that was just for show. I was in complete control for pretty much most of the time.”
There came a point in the fight, where Horn realized he was winning the contest.
“Throughout those first few rounds that I won, I was like, ‘Holy crap, I’m beating Pacquiao here, I’m winning these rounds. I’m going back to my corner and they’re telling me ‘you’re doing well, you’re winning that round,’" Horn said.
Horn believes Pacquiao and his team took him very lightly. During the media events, like press conferences, Pacquiao was texting and playing with his cell phone while Horn would speak at the podium.
“It was annoying,” Horn said. “Normally they would show complete attention. You wouldn’t see him doing that at a Mayweather or someone’s press conference — he’d be showing attention. I think he thought it was a walk in the park, he was just coming to win in front of 50,000 people and go home easy.”
There is a rematch clause. The second fight would take place in the fall or it possibly might get pushed back to early 2018.
“It’s looking like a mid-November type date, it could be December still. Until we nut it all out and know exactly what’s going on, until I hear it from the promoter myself — that’s when I know the fight’s on," Horn said.
