McGuigan: Ohara Davies Only Has Puncher's Chance With Taylor

Ohara Davies will discover to his cost that Josh Taylor has got all the tools when they clash at Braehead Arena on July 8, according to the Scot's trainer Shane McGuigan.

Both boxers are unbeaten with Taylor, 26, the Commonwealth super lightweight champion and Hackney fighter Davies the WBC silver title holder.

However, McGuigan believes the 25-year-old Englishman, who has 12 knockouts in 15 wins, will be out of his depth against Taylor, who boasts eight wins inside the distance in nine bouts since turning professional in 2015, after winning a Commonwealth Games gold medal the previous year.

McGuigan told Press Association Sport: "Josh is becoming a really complete fighter. When he turned professional and started working with me we had a long run-in towards his debut.

"We worked a lot on his punching power, setting himself a little bit more and he is so accurate, heavy-handed and quick that he blitzes these guys.

"We also worked a lot on his strength and overall performance, slowing him down so he is not rushing his work because he is so used to the amateur system.

"I really feel that he is a complete fighter. Every fight is a gamble but the ball is in our court. Josh is fighting at home, he has way more experience in the boxing ring and all the skill-set lies in his favour.

"The only thing that Ohara Davies has is a puncher's chance. He is not going to nick rounds off Josh, or out-box him."

McGuigan believes next month's encounter will increase Taylor's profile, taking him another step towards what he hopes will be the world stage.

He said: "For sure, definitely. It is one of those fights. If you look at George Groves when he fought James DeGale in the early stage of his career, it elevated him to another level.

"He became a headline act almost after that and I feel this will be the same with Josh due to the fact that it is going to be on terrestrial television and will be viewed by millions and hopefully in a sold-out arena.

"That is what we want. This is where stars are made.

"This kid (Davies) is cashing out.

"In the negotiations all he wanted was the biggest cheque. That's all he cared about.

"Josh said he didn't care what he got - don't get me wrong, he is getting well paid - but he just wants to make sure that he wins, goes on to another level and gets that bit closer to a world title because that's his dream."

This gonna be a good matchup between 2 British prospects.
I feel a little like Taylor's side is on a high horse, overlooking Davis because he only has a short amateur career, 18 fights if I know it right.

Roc Nation Prez: Hopefully Main Events Contributes To Promotion

by Radio Rahim

Los Angeles, California - Michael Yormark, the President of Roc Nation, believes his company is currently flying solo in the promotional build-up for the upcoming rematch between Andre Ward (31-0, 15 KOs) and Sergey Kovalev (30-1, 26 KOs).

Last November, Ward won a close twelve round decision over Kovalev to capture the IBF, WBO, WBA light heavyweight titles at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The HBO Pay-Per-View rematch takes place on June 17th at the Mandalay Bay.

Main Events, who promote Kovalev, were the lead promoter the first time around. This time around, Roc Nation and Ward have the lead role in the promotion.

Before the interview started, Yormark mentioned that Roc Nation's logo was excluded from some of the promotional items that were visible during the recent open workout for Kovalev.

"I want to make sure that you're in front of the right backdrop, because I noticed that during Kovalev's media day that it didn't have our logo on it and it really wasn't a co-promotion. It was more of Main Events and Sergey, so I really want to make sure that we're in front of the right backdrop and the right fight," Yorkmark told BoxingScene.com.

Prior to the first fight, there was a lot of tension between the two promotional entities.

Have things gotten any smoother between the two?

"To be totally transparent, we really haven't see much of Main Events. Obviously [Main Events CEO] Kathy [Duva] has talked a lot about her 39 years of experience in the boxing space, which is a lot more than we have. For whatever reason, she has decided to take a step back and really not contributed to the overall success of the promotion," Yormark said.

"But that's Ok, Roc Nation is the lead promoter. We've worked very close with Andre, who's done a tremendous job of promoting this fight. He's done everything that we've asked him to do. We've done everything we can to make sure that June 17th will be a spectacular event - not just in Las Vegas, but for the people who purchased the pay-per-view."

"Hopefully Main Events will make some contributions as we get closer to the fight in the next two weeks. Our goal and number one focus is to make sure that we put on a great event, and I think that its going to be a great event."

Duva also spoke to BoxingScene in a recent interview, and explained that her company does not agree with the promotional tactics of Roc Nation.

“We have a rematch of the most controversial fight of last year,” Duva told BoxingScene.com. “We have two guys who are rated No. 1 and No. 2 by The Ring magazine fighting each other. This is only the second time that has ever happened. The first time was [Pernell] Whitaker and [Julio Cesar] Chavez. That was 24 years ago [September 1993]. This is a historic fight. Why they think they need to come up with this ‘As the World Turns’ stuff to try to sell the fight is beyond me.

“This is the Roc [Nation Sports] way. This is how they think you’re supposed to sell a fight. They must, because this is what they’re doing. I have been in that position, where you have a fight and nothing was working. You saw Bob Arum in that position last week, when he was in Chicago [for 2016 Olympian Michael Conlan’s second pro bout]. ‘What the hell else is there? Let me go out and say something crazy.’ I get it. But this isn’t that fight. The story here is that we had a very close fight between two great fighters, that had a very controversial ending, which by the way, is the way Whitaker and Chavez ended as well. That happens when two of the best fighters in the world get in the ring together. The problem is their fighter doesn’t want to acknowledge that happened.”

Main Events and Duva can't really promote. The hype Kovalev gathered is rather because of himself (the whole Krusher brand, etc...) and HBO, Main Events didn't do shyt for promotion they only provided Kovalev the opportunity to fight in America.
Duva particularly is still on the "this fight will sell itself" bullshyt, she just said it again the other day in an interview. It's a proven bullshyt. The first fight didn't generate big numbers and they didn't even try to promote it that much, and then now before te second fight they still come with the "this fight sells itself" bullshyt, smh...

In retrospective why do y'all think Golovkin blew up more than Kovalev?

Kovalev is in a heavier (so probably more accessible for casuals) and better-more competitive division than Golovkin, also a KO monster and tbh I think a better fighter overall but it's still Golovkin who blew up.
Personality wise they are both marketable, just the opposites, Golovkin aka the good guy, Kovalev aka the mean mfer

I guess it has something to do with K2 being better at promotion than Main Events but it still feels like HBO meant Golovkin as the bigger star out of the two from the beginning even before Kovalev's racist antics became known (not sure that would bother HBO anyway).

Kovalev isn't really marketable to people in North America the way Golovkin is. Kkkrusher comes across as an a$$hole as well.
