Lawsuit against Canelo Alvarez holds up talks on fight with Gennady Golovkin

LA Times

One of the reasons discussion about a Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin fight has gone cold is because Alvarez is in a Miami courtroom this week with his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, who’s arguing that he didn’t steal Alvarez from a smaller promoter years ago.In the civil trial that began Monday, promoter Felix “Tuto” Zabala Jr. and his company, All-Star Boxing, seek punitive damages, contending that All-Star Boxing signed a four-year deal with Alvarez in 2008 and that De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions swiped Alvarez the next year.Zabala told boxingscene.com Monday that “we want to set a precedent here, a lesson to be learned that you have to honor your contract once you enter into a legally binding agreement.”Alvarez fought nine times under the All-Star Boxing banner, then left for Golden Boy in 2009. The lawsuit followed in 2011 but a court date was delayed by Alvarez’s commitments to fight dates, including the third-richest bout in history -- his 2013 loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr.Although Golden Boy’s attorneys and executives have declined comment on the case, it’s believed they’ll counter All-Star Boxing’s claims by maintaining that Alvarez signed the deal with Zabala under duress.A Golden Boy spokesman described All-Star Boxing’s case as “a money grab.”"We look forward to clearly demonstrating that this case has no merit," Golden Boy spokesman Stefan Friedman said, adding that All-Star Boxing is "looking to cash in on Canelo's success."The court case could last until early June.Meanwhile, Golovkin’s promoter, Tom Loeffler, is working in Europe and isn’t expected to return to Los Angeles until early June. The World Boxing Council last week stripped Alvarez (47-1-1, 33 knockouts) of his middleweight belt and gave it to mandatory challenger Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs), who also wears the World Boxing Assn. and International Boxing Federation versions of the division title.Alvarez rejected a mandated purse split of 55%-45% in his favor after he sold around four times as many pay-per-views in his May 7 knockout of England’s Amir Khan than Golovkin, 34, did in his October victory over David Lemieux. The parties will now discuss a revised purse split more in Alvarez’s favor, and the more popular Alvarez, 25, might also seek, to fight at a catch-weight below the middleweight limit of 160 pounds. If they can strike a deal this summer, AT&T Stadium outside Dallas could host the bout Sept. 17. If not, the fighters are expected to seek alternative foes with an eye toward a May 2017 bout.“The negotiations are not dead,” Loeffler said. “Canelo is still the priority for Gennady, and we’ll try to do what we can from our side to make that fight. It’s the biggest fight in boxing. Golden Boy and Canelo are dealing with that lawsuit now. They need to focus on that. "It's a fight we want to make and give to boxing fans."But there’s still plenty of time left to make the fight for September. It’s just a matter of sitting down when they’re finished and seeing if we can make all the pieces fit together."It's a fight we want to make and give to boxing fans."

[VIDEO] ANDRE BERTO TALKS POTENTIAL CLASH WITH DANNY GARCIA; SAYS HE HAS CHINKS IN HIS ARMOR, BUT IS DANGEROUS || FIGHTHYPE.COM

"We'll see what happens...setting some bit things up...right now, I feel like the old me...I'm healthy...it doesn't matter who they put in front of me...I'm feeling strong, I'm feeling explosive...everybody wants to fight him because they see a lot of chinks in his armor...if I get an opportunity, I'm definitely going to capitalize on it," stated former world champion Andre Berto, who talked about a potential clash with welterweight champion Danny Garcia. Check it out!

try to check out ggg vs kassim ouma again when you get a chance.

Dunno why more fighters pitted against ggg don't study this fight. It's a blueprint of how to fight him successfully.

if anyone tries to fight him like that rightnow they are getting knocked out.

this is a classic example on how raw these guys look when they come from shytty trainers.

@Newzz, without quoting all your posts...and being a vocal member of #GGGoodBoys and #Thurminators:

Guerrero was not a great opponent when Thurman fought him. Guerrero was in the process of being a shot fighter. We can't hype up that victory at all. Reality is Porter is Thurman's best fight to date and despite the fact I don't like how Porter fights, he is a test. If you can get through Porter you definitely can fight. It will be his best opponent of his career and he hasn't fought a guy near this level since Chaves.

I don't believe the hype on GGG being the hardest puncher in boxing. Even Martin Murray said that GGG can hit hard, but it isn't something outlandishly above others guys. I also don't think GGG is the best one punch KO artist. What I thinks is key is if you look at his overall arsenal, GGG has one of the largest repertoire of punches he throws and I think he can put great power on any punch he throws. Where most guys only have great power in one or two punches (seems like the left hook is one of the most common), I think GGG can do that with any punch. Just saw an interview where Rosado was saying GGG punches hard and he is legitimately heavy handed and Rosado has been in with a lot of big hitters (Rosado was dissing Stevens because apparently Stevens said GGG didn't hit hard. And Rosado said: hard enough to knock you down and make you look like a deer in the headlights.

And for you and @patscorpio,
The Ouma fight did show how to be effective vs. GGG, but we have long known that the great matchup for a stalker is pure boxing. As Pat said, GGG got touched up a bit, but Ouma is a tough dude and he took a lot of punishment. By the end he was getting wobbled and knocked down by GGG's jab.

In regards to Lara-GGG. Personally it would be an interesting enough fight, but also one that doesn't have to be made. I agree Lara is in no position to call out GGG and for it to be a duck. Dude hasn't even come close to setting himself apart at 154 and he isn't a financially viable fighter. So to GGG he is the lil homie. Lara calling him out might make the fight have more story lines and more interest, but it is so far from a needed fight. No one would say boo about that fight or have even wanted it if Lara wasn't talking about. Reality is GGG needs to pressure Jacobs or BJS into fighting. Those fights have far more value career wise, within the division, and financially.

Oh...and I agree with how a Lara-GGG fight would play out. Lara would become Lateral and pop GGG from the outside, GGG would eat his punches up like Scooby snacks and cut the ring off until he closed the distance and wore Lara down enough for a stoppage.

ggg had the same trainer for that fight so wtf are you talking about?

He'd suddenly be able to generate the same amount of torque and power on his inside punches that he wasn't able to X amount of years ago?

he fought ouma in june 2011 and was 29.

ouma was at the end of his career and 2 for 7 going into that fight. 2 for 7.

theres no way anyone can sit through that fight and come away thinking ggg is a guy that cant be beat.

He can be beat....however, I seriously doubt anyone who doesn't have the power to make GGG second guess himself loses badly (either KO or wide UD).

GGG will lose once he moves up to 168 or some of the bigger/stronger 154lbers infiltrate 160.

Canelo beats him at 155, toss up at 157, and GGG wins at 160.

Lara wants fight with GGG, rematch with Alvarez

Lara outpoints Martirosyan, retains 154-pound title

Junior middleweight titleholder Erislandy Lara outpointed Vanes Martirosyan in a rematch of their 2012 technical draw on Saturday night at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas to retain his belt for the fourth time and is calling for a bigger fight.

Lara (23-2-2, 13 KOs), a former amateur standout on the Cuban national team before he defected, is the consensus No. 1 boxer at 154 pounds. But because his fights -- to put it nicely -- generally lack in entertainment value thanks to a less-than-scintillating technical style, he has not gained any traction with fans.

That makes it hard for him to secure major fights with any regularity, though because he mouthed off at Canelo Alvarez at the news conference after his win against Alfredo Angulo in 2014, Alvarez decided to fight him next (much to the chagrin of his handlers at Golden Boy). Alvarez beat him by well-deserved split decision in a fight that helped Lara cement his reputation for mobility by running like a track star for long stretches.

Now Lara wants a rematch with Alvarez, who went on to win the lineal middleweight title, or a shot at three-belt unified middleweight titleholder Gennady Golovkin. Neither fight has much of a chance to happen, but nobody should blame the 33-year-old Lara for calling for them.

"I'm ready to step up and fight anyone in my division, or if a big fight can be made at middleweight, I'm willing to be great [by moving up in weight],” Lara said. “My first choice is to fight GGG. My next choice would be to have a rematch with Canelo.”

If he can’t land either fight, Lara has another thing in mind: making junior middleweight history.

“If either fight can't be made, then my focus will be to put my name in the record books. All the fights at this level are tough, so to break the record for most consecutive title defenses at [junior middleweight] would be unbelievable,” Lara said.

Italy’s Gianfranco Rosi set the record by making 11 consecutive defense of his 154-pound belt between 1989 and 1994, going 10-0-1.

"I'm ready to fight anybody between welterweight and middleweight,” Lara said. “My first choice is to fight GGG because I feel he's the toughest opponent and would be a fight that would solidify my legacy. My next choice would be to have a rematch with Canelo because we all know there's unfinished business with lots of controversy. If either fight can't be made, then my focus will be to put my name in the record books and defend my titles 12 times to break the record and unify [the titles] all at the same time."

So Lara is saying he will fight anyone from 147 - 160 huh?:jbhmm:

Cant wait for the spin on that statement later on down the line:wow:
