Trout on Williams: If it Means Something To PBC - Bring It!

Posted by: Jake Donovan on 9/9/2015 .

By Jake Donovan

His most recent victory was barely five minutes old when Austin Trout decided to take the first step towards planning his next fight.

The former super welterweight champion picked up his fourth straight win on Tuesday, knocking out Joey Hernandez in the 6th round of their headlining at Hollywood Palladium in Hollywood, California. The bout helped kick off the latest Premier Boxing Champions series, PBC on Fox: Toe To Toe Tuesdays, which by his own admission was why Trout entertained the idea of facing Hernandez—means to remain active while building towards another title run.

Trout insisted beforehand that he would like for his next fight to be for a major title, or an opportunity that would put him in line for such a shot.

“The next fight has to be a name,” Trout (30-2, 17KOs) told BoxingScene.com. “We've gone through this level. I hope Charlo beats K9 (Cornelius Bundrage) this weekend (on NBC). I'd love to get him next, or else anyone that gets me closer to another world championship.”

One name that has been mentioned over the past few weeks is unbeaten super welterweight contender Julian 'J-Rock' Williams, who boasts his own win over Hernandez, having pitched a 10-round shutout in their CBS-televised clash in April.

The two have exchanged words in recent times, but Trout waited until post-fight to take his latest shot at the talented Philly fighter.

“I showed you how to do it, son. I knocked (Hernandez) out, you went in there and played with him," Trout pointed out before dropping a challenge. "If (Williams) wants it, he can come get it next.”

As he’s desired for the past several months, Williams has openly accepted the challenge.

“I'm down 110% to fight Trout,” Williams told BoxingScene.com’s Ryan Burton.”It's funny he's talking sh*t about beating a fighter I just beat when he could have just fought me.”

Williams is currently training for his own PBC on Fox headliner, as he faces Luciano Cuello on September 22 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Of course, all bets are off until that show is in the books.

The way Trout sees it, though, is that he’s granting a favor just by suggesting the fight.

In terms of pursuing a major title, Trout is rated higher than Williams according to all relevant major sanctioning bodies. The reality is that he can go after the winner of Bundrage vs. Charlo, or any other title without having to step to Williams, whose past and current words he dismisses as nothing more than means to hype a fight that he doesn’t necessarily need.

“It's gym talk,” Trout says of Williams’ past remarks, though also stating his willingness to make such a fight happen if there exists such a demand. “J-Rock does nothing for my career. He doesn't get me closer to a title shot. But a win over him will get me more respect, and a good payday too. If it’s a fight that means something for PBC, then bring it.”

Froch: “I never rated Groves”
By Lonsdale | September 9, 2015 | 21 Comments

A number of months ago, George Groves promised James DeGale that he would fight him if he managed to defeat Andre Derrell in a fight for the vacant IBF Super-Middleweight title, something DeGale went on to do on May 23rd.

If Groves himself manages to gain the WBC Super-Middleweight belt from Badou Jack when he fights him on Saturday, the showdown between the two brits is bound to take place. However, four time world champion Carl Froch, who famously beat George Groves twice, does not rate either of the fighters.

In an exclusive interview with Lonsdale he said: “I think they’re both equally as poor as each other.

“I’ve never rated George Groves. He gave me a good fight in the first match because I wasn’t prepared, the rematch was easy. And James DeGale lost to George Groves…”

Despite Groves beating DeGale in the first fight between the two, Froch thinks that the latter will come away from the rematch victorious, and believes that he is one of the main reasons for that, he continued:

“How does the rematch go? I think because of what I’ve done to George Groves I’ve probably taken the sting out of his tail and DeGale is now confident after a weak performance from a poor Derrell, so he will probably edge the fight.”

When it comes to his personal favourite, Froch does not sway either way, but hopes for a good scrap where both fighters manage to do damage to each other, he told Lonsdale:

“Who would I want to win? I couldn’t care less. As long as they punch each other’s heads in for twelve rounds I’ll be smiling because they’ll both leave the ring bruised and battered, but like I said, I think James DeGale will win.”

Froch: “I never rated Groves”

Frochy Froch knows they are both food at 168:dead:

Ward cleared up, 168 was a pretty hot division during and shortly after the super 6's . Its shyt now:mjcry:

so funny that this nothing card was posted to prove a point

but lenny z stood out to me, the guy is an australian who got a title shot like 5 years ago and lost, and was just fighting bums in australia since then. he's on this anonymous card and I do a bit more research...

taking 9 months off , new promoter, new competition. watch out for him, he'sfighting for a title this time next year
Australian junior welterweight Lenny Zappavigna (33-2, 23 KOs) has signed with Top Rank, the company announced.

Known to many as “Lenny Z,” he has been training in Southern California, including time at Freddie Roach’s famed Wild Card Boxing Club. He has won eight fights in a row (six by knockout) since back-to-back losses, including by decision challenging then-lightweight titleholder Miguel Vazquez in Las Vegas in March 2011.

"I am ready for the big fights against the top fighters," said Zappavigna, who is managed by Cameron Dunkin and Michael Altamura. "While growing up in Australia I played some soccer and did karate. Then, as a teenager I got into boxing and have been devoted to the sport since then. Training at Wild Card is incredible. I have had a lot of sparring with some of the best fighters in the world."

Zappavigna’s first fight with Top Rank has not been scheduled yet.

"I really believe in Zappa," Dunkin said. "He has grown as a fighter and in my opinion he will be a world champion in the near future."

Trying to overprice yourself again huh?:francis:

I'm a believer in J-Rock, and If Trout wants to get that work, then so be it. If his ass doesn't price himself out again, I do respect him for taking the fight, because he is right in the sense that he really doesn't need to take the fight at all. Should be an interesting test for both if it happens, a test if J-Rock is ready for a title shot and if Trout is still a contender ( he did look good yesterday against a clearly overmatched hernandez)
