Sirimongkol Singwancha to get world title shot against unbeaten American champion!
Boxing is strange. There is no getting around he fact that we see some very peculiar things in this sport of ours. Some of those strange things are inexplicable world title fights that's that leave us simply wondering "what is going on here?" The are bouts that simply don't make sense, they are bouts that shouldn't be made, they shouldn't even really be sanctioned.
One such bout was reported in Thailand earlier today and left us picking our jaws off the flaw, scratching our heads and feeling lost and confused about this great sport of ours.
The bout in question will feature 38 year former Bantamweight world champion
Sirimongkol Singwancha (84-2, 52), who is, admittedly, unbeaten in 12 years with a 41 fight winning streak fighting against unbeaten American world champion
Demetrius Andrade (21-0, 14), for Andrade's WBO Light Middleweight title.
Singwancha was, once, a top tier fighter. The veteran is already a 2 weight world champion, having held title at Bantamweight and Super Featherweight. Though those reigns came more than a decade ago. In fact Singwancha's first reign came almost 20 years ago, when he over-came Jose Luis Bueno for the WBC interim Bantameight title back in 1996. He was later upgraded to the "full" champion before losing the title in 1997 to Japanese mega-star Joichiro Tatsuyoshi. In 2002, more than 10 years ago, he claimed his second divisional world title, the WBC Super Featherweight title, and defended it once before losing the belt, in the US, to Jesus Chavez. That was his last world title fight way back in 2003.
Aged 38, as mentioned, Singwancha debuted in 1994 as a 17 year old. Whilst a relatively big guy for Bantamweight in his pomp, he is only 5'7" and looks like a small Light Middleweight, where he has been campaigning in recent years. Between his championship reigns and now he's had an interesting career out of the ring having been featured in a photoshoot for a gay magazine and being arrested for drug dealing.
As for Andrade, the WBO world champion is a very touted 27 year old from Rhode Island who was an amateur star before beginning his professional career in 2008, aged 21. He began his professional career with many expecting him to become a top level fighter in, or around, Middleweight given his rangy 6'1" frame and the fact he was still growing into his his body when he turned professional. Since then his career has been a bit stop-start though in recent times he has looked impressive and scored notable wins against Vanes Martirosyan and Brian Rose, to claim and defend the WBO crown. Sadly he has been out of action since June 2014 and some have suggested that his career has began to stall a bit too much, losing any real momentum it had.
Although not the most active of fighter Andrade is widely regarded as being on of the very best fighters in the 154lb weight class. He's a sharp boxer-puncher who is lightning quick, powerful and technically very solid. He could, and really should, be looking at fights with the likes of Erislandy Lara, Saul Alvarez, the Charlo twins and other top names in the weight class. Instead however he'll be facing the enigmatic Thai in what will be his "come back" fighting following a year of inactivity.
The report from Thailand has stated this bout will take place on August 15th at the Foxwoods Casino and Resort.
We do need to quickly note that this bout has, so far, only been reported in Thailand, though we are expecting it to be announced in the US shortly given that the scheduled date in less than 2 months ago.
For those who missed out, we have included Singwancha's bout with Tatsuyoshi below in what is regarded by some as one of 1997's best fights, if you've not seen it, put 30 minutes of your time aside and enjoy a memorable and exciting fight from almost 20 years ago.
