Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has big plans in store for undefeated lightweight contender Omar Figueroa (22-0, 17KOs). Last month, the 23-year-old boxer captured the WBC's interim title with a sensational twelve round unanimous decision over Nihito Arakawa. Figueroa will become the full champion when Adrien Broner, the WBA's champion at 147-pounds, officially walks away from the division.
"Omar is going to become the full champion, once Adrien makes his decision on which division he plans to fight in, but I don't think [Broner is] going to stay at this weight," Schaefer said.
Figueroa has big following in the state of Texas, where his last three fights took place. Schaefer is very interested in staging a big Texas showdown between Figueroa and former champion Juan Diaz (37-4, 19KOs), who also has a big following in Texas.
Last week, Diaz returned to the ring in Laredo in the main event slot of a Top Rank promoted card. Diaz is reportedly working with Top Rank on a fight by fight basis.
"He's working with Top Rank on a fight by fight. He worked with us on a fight by fight. All of that means is that he's a free agent," Schaefer said.
