Prograis On Recent Mikey Garcia Loss: 'I Was The Biggest Loser; I Would Have Destroyed Mikey'

Regis Prograis is still smarting over missing out on what would have been a once-in-a-career opportunity.

For a time the Houston-based southpaw was involved in serious discussions to fight four-division champion Mikey Garcia. But Garcia decided to take a tune-up fight against unheralded Spaniard contender Sandor Martin this past October, only to lose by stunning majority decision: one judge had it a draw, while two others had Martin up 97-93.

“It was very frustrating,” Prograis said of being unable to make a fight with Garcia on the Boxing With Chris Mannix podcast. “I know Mikey. Me and Mikey was on Facetime together, he was saying he wants to fight me. But of course he wanted to get a tune-up so that’s why he fought a lefthander in Martin. But then he ended up losing.

“I think, for me, I was the biggest loser that night, for sure. I definitely think I would have destroyed Mikey that night, for sure. I think Mikey is a great fighter but that night he looked shot.”

“It just looked like his timing was off,” Prograis (26-1, 22 KOs) continued. “In a lot of his fights he’s a slow starter and he tries to time you with that big right hand. But he was throwing it, he couldn’t land it. About the seventh round, he needed a knockout. I think he hit [Marin] — in the seventh or eighth round — he hit him with a right hand that was kind of hard, but Sandor Martin was fine. So I said he probably isn’t going to knock him out.”

The 32-year-old Prograis has recently signed a deal with Probellum, a new promotional outfit headed by former Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer. He is hoping they can get him the sort of fights that have eluded him ever since dropping a close decision to unified 140-pound titleholder Josh Taylor in 2019.

“It’s just frustrating,” Prograis said. “I had so many big fights come up but they never came to fruition. The Mikey Garcia [fight] fell through, Adrien Broner, Gervonta Davis, Mario Barrios. All those fights my name was thrown around but nothing ever happened. It’s kind of just frustrating.”

Prograis still believes Garcia (40-2, 30 KOs) can mount a comeback.

“You don’t know if that’s going to be him for the rest of his career or if it was just that night,” Prograis said. “Sometimes that’s how it is in boxing. It’s a cruel sport. But a lot of greats came back. My favorite fighter is [Roberto] Duran. He kept coming back. Even Sugar Ray Leonard. They kept coming back. Maybe Mikey can come back. Or maybe he is done. We don’t know. We’ll see in his next fight or what his next move is going to be.”

Man this Takes me back to when WW division was last fun.

young Thurman running up on ppl crashing interviews talking crazy as hell, Swift and his pops' cocaine antics, Adrien "About Billions" Broner living vicariously through Floyd and thinking he's untouchable, Spence caving dudes heads in, Sean Porter dragging any and every opponent into a life and death 12 rd tornado, Amir Khans handspeed, Amir Khan's getting KO'd speed, Pacquiou and his wildcard appearances. And of course "Who can break the Mayvinchi code?"

Charles Martin Feels He Would Have Shocked Wilder: He Lacks in A lot of Areas

Charles Martin explains that he was involved in negotiations to fight Deontay Wilder in a battle of former world champions.

Those negotiations were derailed when Wilder secured a legal victory at arbitration to force a trilogy fight with WBC world champion Tyson Fury.

Wilder would eventually face Fury in October. He dropped Fury twice, but ultimately was knocked out in the eleventh round.

Martin will return to the ring on Saturday night, when he faces dangerous puncher Luis Ortiz in a high-stakes fight. The fight has been sanctioned as an IBF world title eliminator.

"It would have been a great opportunity," Martin told Sky Sports about facing Wilder. "I always knew there was a possibility that things wouldn't go in my favor, but I had still prepared myself mentally.

"I was able to treat it like a championship fight. I gave 100 percent effort even knowing there was a possibility it could fall through."

If the fight with Wilder would have gone forward, Martin believes that he would have exposed Wilder's flaws.

"He lacks in a lot of areas. I am pretty difficult to hit. You can't hit me flush because I never just come in [straight]. I am always strategic," Martin said.

Martin was also in talks to face former unified champion Andy Ruiz.

That fight also fell out, when Ruiz underwent surgery to correct a knee injury.

"I shot him a personal DM," Martin said about Ruiz Jr. "He left it unread. We were training for it. The next thing? He had a surgery.

"Now I pray for no crazy calls saying that Ortiz is injured. Andy knew I would have whupped his ass. That's why he didn't answer me. Because he knew that he didn't want to fight me."

Martin has been out of the ring since February of 2020, when he knocked out Gerald Washington.

Stephen Edwards Talks Julian Williams and Kyrone Davis’ Futures, Crawford, More

In this Q&A world class trainer and BoxingScene.com contributor Stephen “Breadman” Edwards discusses the futures of two of his fighters who suffered recent losses. (photo by Ryan Hafey)

Former unified super welterweight champion Julian “J Rock” Williams was upset by Vladimir Hernandez on October 9th and Kyrone Davis lost to David Benavidez on November 13th in a fight he took on short notice above his natural weight class of 160 pounds.

BoxingScene.com: Kyrone Davis has fought as a super middleweight in his last 3 fights. Will he be fighting at 160 in next fight?

Stephen Edwards: Yes sir. That is the plan but you can't talk in absolute terms in boxing. Anything can change at any given moment.

BoxingScene.com: What has he showed you fighting in a higher weight class that isn’t advantageous for him?

Stephen Edwards: Ky can fight at 168. He showed me a lot versus Dirrell. For David Benavidez, we had 17 days to train. That's a tough task on 8 weeks. 2 1/2 weeks is super tough. David is a tremendous fighter. He's going to be on the pound-for-pound list some day. But Kyrone can fight. He just needs to lock in and show the world what I already know.

At 160 he's super strong for opponents but obviously it's harder to make weight. So there are pros and cons. I just want 6 to 8 weeks to get ready for our next fight. People think Kyrone can't punch because he doesn't have alot of KOs. But he can punch hard enough trust me. He's fast and strong. He's going to be a player at 160. I want a big name. Someone who fought for a world title or an ex-champion level fighter.

BoxingScene.com: What went working with Julian Williams against Hernandez and what are his future plans?

Stephen Edwards: Julian has to clear up a few things, then hopefully he gets back in the ring by the spring. I thought he started well in his fight, but he didn't close out like he normally does. Honestly, I don't know what happened because he was super sharp for the first 5 or 6 rounds. He didn't look rusty but rust shows up in many forms. Maybe he was rusty as far as handling fatigue. Hernandez was tough and he didn't stop trying. Nevertheless, I'm looking forward to finding out exactly what went wrong and seeing if we can fix it. One nice win and Jrock is back in the picture.

BoxingScene.con: I also would like to get your thoughts on the Crawford-Porter result?

Stephen Edwards: The result, I mean Crawford won in a really good fight. Both he and Shawn showed elite level stuff. I really enjoyed the fight and the skill level they showed. Shawn fought great. That was actually the best I've ever seen him look. But credit to Crawford for still getting a convincing win even though Shawn fought so well.

BoxingScene.con: Who do you want to see Crawford fight next?

Stephen Edwards: I don't like playing matchmaker with other guy's careers publicly. So whoever Crawford wants.

BoxingScene.com: Now for the great debate. Pound for Pound, who’s #1? Canelo or Crawford?

Stephen Edwards: Flip a coin. Call them 1a and 1b. It's really that close in my opinion.
