Farmer-Diaz Clash Unlikely For Pre-Super Bowl Show In Miami
By Jake Donovan

Published On Tue Dec 10, 2019, 07:35 AM EST

The war of words between Tevin Farmer and Joseph ‘Jo Jo’ Diaz continues to remain limited to just talk.

BoxingScene.com has learned that plans for a pre-Super Bowl title fight grudge match between the pair of bitter junior lightweight rivals are no longer in place, although the bout still remains on course to happen at some point in the 1st quarter of 2020.

The bout was due to serve as part of a Jan. 30 DAZN-streamed show at a makeshift stadium in Miami, Florida, taking place during the week of Super Bowl XLIV also in Miami. However, undisclosed issues have created yet another delay for a fight that has been in discussion for months yet remains without a firm date.

Philadelphia’s Farmer (30-4-1, 6KOs) looks to make the fifth defense of the 130-pound title he claimed in a 12-round win over Billy Dib on the road last August on the road in Australia. His four title defenses all took place in the span of just over nine months, knocking out James Tennyson in three rounds and then racking up a trip of points wins over Francisco Fonseca last December in New York City, Ireland’s Jono Carroll in his Philadelphia hometown and, most recently, Guillaume Frenois this past July in Arlington, Texas.

Wedged in between his wins over previously unbeaten Carroll and France’s Frenois came a hostile run-in with California’s Diaz (30-1, 15KOs) this past May in Las Vegas. Diaz was preparing for a fight on the undercard of World middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, eventually scoring a knockout win over Freddy Fonseca—Francisco’s older brother—but not before getting into a well-publicized verbal altercation with Farmer, who was merely in town as an interested observer of the card as a whole.

Diaz took on a stay-busy fight while waiting on a second career title fight, though perhaps providing more harm than good as the 2012 U.S. Olympian suffered an injury en route to a 12-round majority decision win over Jesus Cuadro this past September in his first career fight in Mexico.

A deal for a fight with Farmer was hoped to be reached, with fight dates eyed for November and December before finally gaining legs in potentially landing on the Jan. 30 pre-Super Bowl card.

The show will go in South Beach, just without the grudge match in tow.

The bill will feature a junior bantamweight title unification clash between World champion Juan Francisco Estrada (40-3, 27KOs) of Mexico and England’s unbeaten titlist Kal Yafai (26-0, 15KOs). Also being discussed for the show is unbeaten middleweight titlist Demetrius Andrade (28-0, 17KOs) in a voluntary title defense versus Ireland’s Luke Keeler (17-2-1, 5KOs).

WTF :hhh:..what undisclosed issues? @LauderdaleBoss you see this shyt here :gucci:

Joshua, whose parents are both of Nigerian descent, revealed on Monday that somewhere down the road, his goals would also include defending one of his heavyweight belts in Nigeria.

"People had been telling me I should go back for ages," he told reporters. "It was crazy because they don't have 24-hour electricity, but they still know me and support me.

"I went to the ghettos of the ghettos, where it's not all about egos and beef, it's about people who are hungry to survive."

He added: "It was one of the best things I've done. Africa's rooting for me for sure, so I would definitely love to fight out there."

Would be great to have another mega fight in Africa again. Would create more history.

If i'm Usyk, I fight Chisora then fight Parker and THEN fight for a title but with how title fights are ordered, that's not going to happen. He's up after the Chisora fight.

1 or 2 more fights would help Usyk be ready but he may not have that luxury, I have heard Usyk has already bulked up a lot though.

The problem is guys like Farmer and Andrade don't make these paydays without a PBC fighter. Andrade can't even get a DAZN fighter in the ring with him, but since Charlo is a free agent he has to go over there and build up thier app. They can get more exposure fighting on Fox in front of millions of viewers. Charlo has Eubanks, Drevenchenko, and Hurd lined up when he moves up. Tank got Leo, Mares, etc. on the PBC side.
Gary Russell is also a free agent (dont think he is with Haymon anymore). Why don't they make that fight? Because neither guy is a draw. Why fight on the B side of the promotions platform?

If Charlo was going to fight on DAZN it would be vs Canelo or GGG. Tank only needs to fight outside of the PBC vs Lomenchenko, and that would most likely be a cross promotion.

In theory maybe but some of the biggest names are on DAZN, like Canelo, AJ or GGG, people definitely tune in for them. FOX has its own lane too with Spence, Pac and from now I guess Wilder.

The fight would be ppv on Fox
Why-how?

Wilder's PPV supposedly bombed last week, Charlo isn't even nearly as known as Wilder, Andrade is lesser known too.
I mean they can do what HBO did while it was dying, putting non-PPV fight on PPV regardless but what's the point?

Crawford is a bigger name than both Charlo and Andrade too, so is Khan, their PPV still bombed.

I don’t understand why y’all keep saying it bombed when Canelo Wilder and Pacquiao have all did at least 3 ppvs with those numbers and both fighters will make significantly less money than the combine 27 million. They could get about 8 each on Fox Ppv. Or at least let it be open to biding

AJ drops the WBO and let Usyk vs Parker happen, AJ fights Pulev to keep the IBF and then they unify that belt and the winner fights Wilder/Fury winner after they fight Dillian Whyte. Problem solved, no? But of course that's not going to happen.

The updated rankings is going to be telling though

I really don’t believe this to be true outside of hardcores, my friends know the Charlos only the guys really into boxing know CRAWFORD. Also, ESPN has done a terrible job with promotion, vice versa Fox has been incredible and these two have a real beef. Well learn more after the Fox regular numbers and purses from Harrison vs Charlo

ESPN really does a terrible job at promoting.

shyt, you gotta have a decent product to promote first. ESPN been underwhelming as fukk this year.

They should have never put Bud on this weekend's card. nikkas ain't bothering to promote it since he fighting a jobber. If Lopez/Commey was the official main event, I feel like they would be promoting it a lil more since that fight has been talked about all fukking year. Now its like whatever, now that its actually happening. :snoop:

If there’s a way he can keep the belts and fight both he will, if they won’t give him any extra time yeah he’ll have to vacate which means Pulev next. Yeah what you said is sensible and makes sense, too much politics in the game.
