Stevenson-Socarras, Greer-Potapov Set For July 13 In Newark

By Keith Idec

Shakur Stevenson’s hometown fight is set for July 13.

The 2016 Olympic silver medalist will meet Miami’s Hairon Socarras in the 10-round main event that night at Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The 21-year-old Stevenson (11-0, 6 KOs) was born and raised in Newark, but the fast-rising featherweight contender now resides in Alexandria, Virginia.

ESPN.com first reported that Stevenson-Socarras was finalized.

Stevenson has been pushing to fight in his hometown since the talented southpaw turned pro two years ago. He recorded the most impressive victory of his pro career near Newark in his last fight.

In that bout, Stevenson convincingly out-pointed Puerto Rico’s Christopher Diaz (24-2, 16 KOs) in a 10-rounder on the Terence Crawford-Amir Khan undercard April 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Diaz was considered a significant step up in opposition, but Stevenson handled him relatively easily.

The Cuban-born, 26-year-old Socarras (22-0-3, 14 KOs) beat Jesus Martinez (25-8, 12 KOs) by fifth-round technical knockout in his most recent fight, May 10 in Hollywood, Florida. Even though Socarras has twice as much pro experience, Stevenson figures to be the best opponent Socarras will have faced since he turned pro in February 2011.

ESPN will televise the Stevenson-Socarras bout as the main event of a doubleheader July 13.

BoxingScene.com has learned that in the co-featured fight that night, Chicago’s Joshua Greer and Russia’s Nikolai Potapov are set to square off in an IBF bantamweight elimination match. They’ll fight for the vacant No. 2 spot in the IBF’s 118-pound rankings.

The 24-year-old Greer (20-1-1, 12 KOs) is rated No. 4 by the IBF, seven spots ahead of the 29-year-old Potapov (20-1-1, 11 KOs).

The July 13 show also will include the return of junior welterweight prospect Julian Rodriguez (16-0, 10 KOs).

The 24-year-old Rodriguez, of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, hasn’t fought since September 2017, largely due to a nagging shoulder injury. Rodriguez’s opponent is not yet set.

The Stevenson-Socarras card will be officially announced June 10 during a press conference at Prudential Center.

Wlad wasn't at the top of the division with 3 belts when he lost though
Joshua did alright until he got knocked down in the 3rd and not taking away anything from Ruiz but Joshua was reckless, went into a slugfest against an opponent who he thought is badly hurt. After that first KD he couldn't find his footing anymore.
He has other flaws too but if he only just keeps Ruiz at bay and making it boring he will have a decent chance to win a rematch.

But Ruiz will also fight with even more confidence, the psychological edge is his of course

I’m looking at it from an experience standpoint.

Despite being on top of the division, he’s actually still developing. He’s only been a professional for 6 years.

Wlad lost to Corrie Sanders in surprise, his 6th year as a pro.

We’re in an era when these guys can get a title and still need to develop.

shyt Wlad lost his zero in his 24th fight to Ross Purrity, a rugged multiple loss journeyman in his second year as a pro and continued on....Femi can still correct his wrongs

That’s what I’m saying.

I’ve been reading respectable posters saying he was a hype job.

Some even saying Ruiz is a bum.

This place is letting me down.:francis:

That’s true. I don’t know why AJ/Ruiz reminds me of Wlad/Sanders. Well actually I do. If you watched wlad/Sanders in real time, the fight between AJ/Ruiz gave me the exact same feel. Not only that, Sanders was only brought in because no one else wanted to fight Wlad, so it sort of felt as he was sort of a replacement. Last, both guys had fast hands that the champion at the time wasn’t equipped to handle. Wlad or AJ don’t have great chins either.

Another reason why moving him to a "2 fights a year" type of guy was done way too soon.

true but it seems like that's the formula nowadays for big draws :francis:

yeah and its becoming the formula to get your ass kicked or look vulnerable in your fight because you not as sharp as you should be.

If you truly love boxing and you're in the physical prime of your career, there's no way anybody should be convincing you to only fight 2x a year.

i still remember watching that fight in real time because i have a memory attached to it...i just came back from visiting a young woman at an all female college for the night...and had to drive in a gotdamn snowstorm for 2 hours :damn:..the alternator on my car was going in and out...shyt was crucial...my car died as soon as i got into my parking garage and it rolled into an empty space :whew:...shyt was stressful :mjcry:...i got up to my apt aturned on the TV to hbo just wanting to relax and not think about having to fix the problem with the car lol...Sanders back then was on some part time shyt...every now and then he would make an appearance on american TV...that slugfest with hasim rahman on hbo was :ohlawd:...and then disappear to play golf..but yeah Wlad at the time was getting groomed to face Lennox Lewis (we got that teaser in ocean's eleven :francis:)...wlad didn't even looked warmed up or nothing...sanders rocked his ass with that left hand of his in the first round and Wlad never recovered from that one shot...so yeah i can see how you can draw that comparison

agendas breh...i thought andy ruiz was skilled but i have a thing about fighters not coming into the ring in condition..and i felt it would hinder him and turn him into another chris arreola and it was a waste..that was my thing about andy ruiz jr
