This is our issue in a nutshell. We have to change our culture.

Went out of my way to patronize a black gas station earlier, driving 30 minutes each way. Turns out it's been removed and there is an apartment complex there now.

We really gotta support our own y'all. We have very few black owned and the ones we have are closing left and right.

I'll probably go to Little Ethiopia next time. I'm sure they have black owned businesses. I'm also going to the Goodwill in a black neighborhood to donate stuff I'm getting rid of.

Breh, I know you want to support black businesses, but driving 30 minutes out of the way to a gas station is not really feasible in the long run. If there are no black businesses around for me to spend my money at, then I try to buy local, in the case of gas stations I try to fill up at places in my town if I have enough gas to get back to town.

I did some research on urban gardens...Im not sure if you are up on this but Vertical growing helps people without a lot of land (or any fertile soil) to still grow gardens.

Shipping containers can cost you as low as 2500 - 5000.

There are DIYs for the portable farm. There are some DIY videos on how to make your own tower too or you could buy one.

Good looking out man. I'm going to hit that brother up and start volunteering at the garden.

I did it for my own research purposes to verify that it's black owned. My goal was to put my business card in their hand and get their contact info to see about linking up with other businesses and letting them know about the Facebook page I'm creating.

Aside from that, what do I really have to lose by filling my tank up there every Sunday to get me through the week? One semi-lengthy weekend drive isn't taxing and gets me out of my comfort zone. :manny:

Plus being in your car for 30 minutes is routine in LA.

As a black though, I feel uncomfortable when I see more and more blacks moving into a neighborhood. I grew up in the hood. I seen what happens. I've lived in mixed areas and seen what happened as more and more blacks moved in. Often times it's not even the ones who live their who cause the most problems its the ones that frequent their homes.

If you are looking for black restaurants to eat at, look up the food trucks in your area and see if any are black owned. I was surprised to find out that a lot of the food trucks in my area are owned by black people.
