Love the tone of the two movies so far in the DCU. It's a complete 180 from what marvel is doing. At one point during the film...I was just staring at the screen taking in the tone (while still paying attention) and I was loving how dark/serious it was. I just love how you can watch 15 mins of man of steel or BvS and instantly tell its the same universe (minus the characters). The films have the same tone and feel and I appreciate the route DC is taking with these films. Even the previews from the Wonder Woman joint gave me similar vibes. it makes me wonder how much involvement Nolan has as a producer, because I can see his touches here and there.
This movie was very ambitious and it nailed a lot of what it was aiming for. There could have been tighter edits made to certain scenes and maybe a bit more exposition (but I don't want every scene spelling shyt out for me). I ever. Thinking about a good amount of scenes since I saw it yesterday and I honestly just want to watch it again now that I know what I know about the film after seeing it and reading breakdowns for certain shyt I didn't know.
The first half of the film was setting up the story and I had no real issues with it. Superman was conflicted about his role in this world. Batman saw superman as an enemy to the planet. Lex was working with private contractors to smuggle and cultivate kryptonite into a weapon against superman. shyt wasn't rocket science. Wonder Woman was in metropolis to steal back proof of who she is (would have liked more details into why this was problematic for her...I guess she wanted off the meta-human radar). The main stories here there were Batman's views on superman and lex plotting against him. The visions batman had were a nice touch and should be something they touch on in future films, a lot of that stuff is gonna go over heads.
The second half of the movie was pure crack. It had better pacing and edits than the first half and things didn't need too much explaining (maybe the lex getting info on darkseid in the ship for those who need everything explained). Batman being on his detective shyt was dope to watch. The phone encryption, the fighting style and swinging around made me mad giddy to actually see that in a film. Superman's inner turmoil played out well....dude was mad conflicted thru the film, was he a God or a man operating to his own set of rules? The scene where the senate blew up was dope. He was so blinded by trying to see the good in ppl (a major theme in the film) that he never once suspected anyone of doing in that situation. The look on his face while the room was in flames said it all, he knew he was fukked in the publics eyes...especially since they were already skeptical of his recent actions. He also realized how far ppl who fear/despise him wil go and how it will put others in danger (look at Martha getting snatched up and was on a schedule to die). I also believe him following lex's commands was bigger than a mother/son thing, it was him basically saying "I'm putting the lives of humans before my own, not just my mom"...the bomb incident played a major part in this. He just wanted to do right by humanity, even if it meant risking his life or going against his beliefs.
The fight scene between batman and superman was dope. Again, to see batman using his gadgets was dope as fukk. The smoke, the kryptonite gas....prep time in screen was lit
The fight gave me vibes of bane giving bats that work on rises....it was that vicious. He damn near killed superman if it wasn't for Bruce's deep love of his mother and seeing the same thing in superman. Some ppl might not like how this scene resolved their differences but it did a lot to humanize superman and show that batman wasn't just some deranged maniac blinded by hatred for superman, he was still rational and level headed to a certain extent, lol.
The doomsday fight and wonder woman's real intro was dope. That theme song is cooked crack. Seeing the three of them standing there together was
the holy trinity of DC heroes on screen together. Gal killed it. The visuals during the fight are crazy, the fighting, the camera work, on point. It was dope seeing superman fight in space too. They also did the death of superman story and it fit perfectly. The entire movie Clark was conflicted with his purpose (which carried over from the first film). He was still unsure of who he was on this planet up to that moment. He realized what he had to do to ensure the safety of his planet and made the ultimate sacrifice. I heard a couple gasps in the theater from ppl, so u think that shocked a lot of ppl.
The hints at a bigger threat and the justice league were all dope. Batman giving lex that grown man talk in jail was
...protect your neck p*ssy. It will be interesting from here on out how they develop the JL coming together for the greater good and I'm looking forward to seeing them go against darkseid.
8.5/10
Would have been a 9/10 with certain scenes extended a bit to fully flesh out certain details in the story. I was never lost once during the film but I understand after seeing the other comic book films over the last couple years that ppl will want a straight forward story so I won't ignore that fact. WB and Zach took plenty risks with this film and I applaud them for it. They were fighting an uphill battle since they announced the film and they pulled it off to a certain extent while establishing a new universe with its own tone and feel. Can't wait fo
