They are. Sadly, they are descended from The Hairstons.

A Family In Black And White

1,400 Hairstons Honor Kinship Born of Slavery
Man, I’ve been reading both these articles all morning, as my grandmother is a Hairston.

These articles are piecing some things together for me. The Hairston plantations were in Mississippi, NC, and Virginia, and one of my ancestors (a Hairston) was freed in Mississippi, and made the trek to NC.

I’ve been to plenty of family reunions in my day, but never a Hairston one. Something in me wants to go, as that’s potentially thousands of my kin that congregate and fellowship. Next time I’m in NC, I’m going to that plantation in High Point. I’m also going to find out where the plantation was in MS. Those are starting points for me, and hopefully I’ll be able to learn more.

Thanks for providing these articles.

No problem. The family is REALLY big and has different arms/lines-- so you may or may not be related to the HodgeTwins line. But, you may be related to the Hairstons still.

Here's a great podcast feature that was done on them. It's really a great listen. Listen to both.

Here's the website that was a companion to the podcast: The Hairstons

The Hairstons Part 1: Snakes on a Plantation
At a plantation in the South, descendants of enslaved people and slave owners stayed together as family, entangled by namesake and blood, long after the end of slavery. Eric tells the story of one woman who broke away.

The Hairstons Part 1: Snakes on a Plantation | The Nod

The Hairstons Part 2: Diary of a Mad Black Cousin
Every year, descendants of both enslaved people and slave owners come together for a family reunion. The darker side of their shared past remains hidden underneath the celebrations and pleasantries. Until one year, when Ever Lee Hairston says two words that break decades of silence.

I went and looked up the actor Jester Hairston, and his place of birth. He’s from Belews Creek, NC which is present day Kernersville and Walkertown, NC. When I look up all my past ancestors/relatives, they share the same starting point. The land that my grandma owns is in that area.

:gladbron:
I haven’t been able to do any work today, as I’ve been immersed in this. I’m going to call my dad up tonight to see what he knows about our Hairston side, and ultimately, I’m going to have a conversation with my grandma. She talks of her younger years often, and she’d be able to give me names. My grandma isn’t doing well, so I need to do this ASAP.

So, I talked with my pop in regards to what I learned in regards to our Hairston side yesterday, and then called up a cousin of mine who knows a great deal about my family history.

According to them, my line or clan fell back from my grandma’s side of the Hairston’s, because a lot of her fam couldn’t stand my grandpa. They didn’t think he was good enough for her. He didn’t have a formal education, worked out in the tobacco fields, and they didn’t like that he was dark skinned. My grandpa proved all of them wrong, though. He made all of his kids, my dad and his siblings, go to college and he’s amassed land of his own and quite the wealth. The only man I know who can go out and buy a new car outright, doesn’t have credit cards, and doesn’t trust banks.

Anyways, my pop wants to reconnect and go to one of those Hairston mega reunions lol. Going to set it up where he, my bro, and I go

CNN Panel Hammers Biden for States' Rights, 'I Have a Black Best Friend' Defense

CNN Panel Rips Biden for Defending States’ Rights, Using ‘I Have a Black Best Friend’ Argument By Name-Dropping Obama
By Reed Richardson
Jun 28th, 2019, 12:14 am

In CNN’s post-debate analysis, panelists Nia-Malika Henderson and Van Jones both sharply criticized former Vice President Joe Biden for his performance, calling out his defense of local and states’ rights in his testy exchange with Senator Kamala Harris and his frequent mentions of President Barack Obama.

Speaking with Congressional Black Caucus chair and Biden advocate Rep. Cedric Richmond (D-La.), Henderson bored in on Biden’s attempt to downplay the consequences of the controversial anti-integration busing legislation he helped pass in the 1970s. The former Senator argued that his bill only prohibited a federally enforced policy of school desegregation, and that local city councils could make their own choice, which was a major fight of the civil rights’ movement.

“It just seems like this is going to put the Congressional Black Caucus in a very difficult position where you’re having to essentially defend somebody who presently is arguing for states’ rights,” Henderson pointed out. “These are positions that people like [Rep.] Jim Clyburn — I mean he marched against these sorts of issues in states like South Carolina where I’m from, for instance. I mean are you worried about members of the CBC — you’re of course one of the leaders of the CBC — carrying this mantle for Joe Biden if he’s continuing to defend states’ rights?”

“Well, look, I don’t think he was trying to defend states’ rights,” Richmond began, but Henderson was not having it.

“But he did. I mean that’s exactly what he did do.”

“Okay. In your opinion he tried to defend states’ rights,” Richmond responded, before offering up a classic spin room take. “I think what I saw was a person attempt to start to explain all of the nuances of that argument at the time and did not finish.”

Later on in the segment, Van Jones also expressed his shock that Biden effectively retreated into what was the segregationist argument against civil rights when Harris called him out onstage.

“If you had told me three hours ago that we would be sitting here trying to figure out how the Congressional Black Caucus can keep supporting Joe Biden, I would have said, on what planet is that? But that’s the planet that we’re on,” Jones said, clearly disappointed. “This is a bad night for Joe Biden. It’s a bad night for Democrats and I think it’s a bad night for his surrogates too, because there is this way in which Joe Biden is sort of using the ‘I have a black best friend’ argument by his continued invocation of Barack Obama. And I think he’s got to figure that out. This was a really bad night for him. I think it’s a bad night for his surrogates. You could see the look on Cedric Richmond’s face. He was very uncomfortable, almost pained, in having to sort of weave, you know, around this issue of what was clear.”

Was disappointed in MW last night. She had a fastball right down the middle, and popped it up. New Zealand?

Also, she was cowardly in the way she let Kamala box her out the paint like that.

If the primaries were today, she’d still get my vote, as she’s the only one who has brought some kind of numbers to the table, but I feel her time is about up. She had nothing to lose last night, and needed to make a splash. She could’ve severely damaged Kamala, but she didn’t. She won’t get another dollar out of me. Oh well.
