Breh that's the front runner right now. Obviously shyt can change but if I was putting money on it I'd go with boyhood although it's the most obvious choice. Maybe the academy will surprise us. I hope so
i know it's pretty much inevitable breh

but i'd like them to show some balls for once then go with a safe Argo like choice (no offense to argo i enjoyed it)

Well if they go off of reviews and buzz and awards already handed out then it'll be between boyhood birdman and Selma with boyhood probably edging them out but we'll see. Looking forward to the globes next Sunday

I feel like there has been alot of pushback about Boyhood in the last 2-3 months. Online it went from the greatest film in the last 10 years to neat idea in terms how they shot it, I'll watch it this week but alot of the hype has died down.

Exactly @the next guy . I study this for my dissertation and its a historical trend that whites do not like when you don't centralize their role in the civil rights movement. They want to emphasize their mobilization with black middle class organizations like NAACP and SCLC and devalue the black masses' organizing themselves...it's Fannie Lou hamer's idea of mobilization vs. organization...That's why they hated the Black power Era and what it stood for because it was about black autonomy and self-determination. Selma represents black autonomy and militancy that the white liberals were not comfortable with...yea you saw some out there, but many stepped back when the real shyt hit the fan...

Selma has no chance of winning best picture at all because of the realistic portrayal on film. Oh well, we know its a phenomenal film.
Of course. Plus the bad portray of one of the more know US presidents has people up in arms. I can see controversy if this is even nominated. I hope the cast gets some awards those. I feel the in the late 2010s we'll see black talent make a comeback.

I really hope the Academy proves you wrong. Boyhood was a big disappointment. The novelty of filming in real time over a decade is the only real thing it has going for it. Hopefully the voting members see through that.

I hope so too but I also think we're giving them a lot more credit than is needed. Some of them don't even watch the movies, they just vote for the thing they're hearing a lot of buzz about

Boyhood+++*+***
Selma****
Birdman******
The Imitation Game*****
Gone Girl***
The Theory of Everything ***
The Grand Budapest Hotel ***
Foxcatcher**
Unbroken***
Mr. Turner
Whiplash***
Nightcrawler**
Into the Woods**
American Sniper**
Interstellar*
A Most Violent Year+
Love is Strange

These are all the rumored movies in contention for best picture.

Crossing my fingers for Selma, Birdman, Nightcrawler and American Sniper.

Into the Woods and Unbroken were VERY disappointing, I don't think they're gonna make it.

I heard about that. WTF? Two Academy voters last year said they voted for 12 Years A Slave but didn't have the heart to watch "that much suffering". :rudy:

Exactly. In one of my public comm classes, we did a study on how oscar campaigns are similar to political campaigns and how studios use those sam tactics to make sure they get votes, specifically the Weinstein's. One thing they do is make sure that the movies are in the theater at the right time specifically in markets for academy voters which is why it's sometimes tough for movies in the summer to get nominated. They host events, a lot of hand shaking, glad handing, you gotta go to all the parties, make sure you're visible, and make sure you've got ads in place at the right time and in the right places (specifically trade rags)

But still ya'll sit around here talking like any of these awards are worth a damn. Instead of Oscar Watchers we should have a thread called "Top 10 2014 Preparation" where we can put/advice people on actual must-see movies of the year to diversify their bonds instead of the same eight movies everybody else is talking about.

Breh we've had this discussion. We're film nerds so we pay attention. We all recognize that there are issues in the process and that it's not perfect and that sometimes it doesn't always work the way we want, but obviously we get excited about it. Let us:cook: breh

Plus we're always suggesting movies in here all of the time. There are plenty of people including @blazn101 and @Uncle_Ruckus who mention how they're put on to stuff they never would've seen if not just for conversation

I actually like both of these ideas. I think we can discuss the awards and have a separate Coli list of our own. I think y'all are doing that, right?
