The Marlins have existed since 1993.
The Rays have existed since 1998.

Even though both franchises have reached the World Series, neither one has proven to be able to consistently draw fans to the ballpark.

The Marlins have never ranked higher than 5th in the NL in attendance, and have finished in the bottom 4 every year since 1998 with the sole exception being 7th in 2020.

The Rays have never ranked higher than 7th in the AL in attendance -- and that was in their 1st season.

It's quite possible both of these franchises are profitable. I don't think their finances are exactly public. But it's clear that fans simply do not care about these teams.
Has either team ever been in the top half of payroll? I don't think so. Why should people show up when the owners themselves don't care?

A team like the Colorado Rockies are routinely in the top half of the National League in attendance and while they are not at the rock bottom in payroll, they're not serious spenders either.

I'd still be surprised if the Red Sox sign Soto. Would love to see him in Boston though. A true city of champions that has been relevant over the last twenty yesrs.

I think this is a good move for the Royals.

Jonathan India doesn't have an elite ceiling like other infielders but he's a solid bat.
Is he a lot better than Massey? Not by a lot. But he's more likely to get on base.

I'm a little surprised Cashman didn't check this out considering they're not bringing back Gleyber Torres and they need a 2B.
Granted, India isn't a great defender and that was one of Gleyber's biggest flaws...but it would have been a fairly stabilizing move.

Having lived in Denver, nobody actually cares about the Rockies. It's just a great place to hang out downtown and it's a nice stadium. Their garbage ass owner takes advantage of this by only doing the bare minimum with the team.

Lotta transient people in the area too so it's easy to see your home team there.

The Rays play in a dump that's out of the way. The Marlins have a 30 year history of tearing the team down whenever they cobble together a semblance of talent.

Patrick Sandoval tore his UCL and might pitch the latter half of 2025, if he's lucky.

I suspect his strikeout ability will suffer a bit. If by chance he comes back strong...and some team with a good pitching coach can fix his walk issues, he's a low risk guy who could sit at the end of a rotation. I'm not sure he's got the kind of stuff to be a late inning reliever.
