@MustafaSTL kinda puts the kids in a choose now or miss out predicament. Numbers ranging anywhere from up to 85% of kids may sign their offers tomorrow
Yep. Most are signing in a few days, so most have to decide on where to sign now or risk losing a spot. If they had the early period in July/August, you'd probably see only half the class signed, if that. Most haven't taken their official visits so they'd be inclined to wait until February like it's always been. The early period is supposed to be for those that already know where they want to go and secure in signing there early to get it over with. This December early period isn't all that early at all. The next period is only like a month and a half away.

For someone who’s let it be known the first opportunity he gets at another HC gig he’s out the door? A mil per sounds about right. Out of the T10 d-coordinators (pay wise), only Pruitt & Venables have won titles. He’s nowhere close to their league
First, pay does not always equal exact placement of talent. Leavitt is now the 3rd highest coordinator in football, is he the 3rd best? Probably not, but with what he did at Colorado and at Oregon in one year, he has proven himself to be one of the best d-coordinator's in football.

Also remember at Oregon we typically have underpaid for coaches, but to get talent at the coaching staff Oregon will likely have to overpay to get talent like Leavitt. Just a fact. And 500k a year is worth the difference between knowing you have THE guy vs. trying to hire a new guy and hoping he works out.

Yes, Leavitt wants to be a head coach, but remember he wants to be KSU's head coach. His contract will definitely be laden with a buyout (learning from Taggart) if he wants to leave. He puts in any contract he signs that there is no buyout if he is offered KSU's head job. You can't not hire a great coordinator if you fear them becoming a head coach. Any great coordinator will be talked about when jobs open up. It is a risk and one you have to take because it comes with the territory of hiring talented people.

Leavitt has proven he knows how to defend the Pac 12 and spread offenses. Among d-coordinators in the Pac 12 that is the most sought after aspect. Plenty of talented defensive minds, but not a lot who are proven to slow or stop the offenses they are playing against.

And lastly my guy Dave Bartoo at the College Football Matrix, ranks Leavitt as an A+ defensive coordinator and hire. He is one of, if not the most accurate, modeler when it comes to college football predictions. So I will take his endorsement as well.

I’ve got no problems with the early signing period. Recruiting is a year round thing, and it KEEPS stress on the coaching staffs. If you’ve got kids that are 100% committed to your program, then there’s nothing wrong with guaranteeing their spot. Obviously, you’ve got the high 4 and 5 star recruits that like the drama, and like the hat game.. and that’s fine. But if a majority of your class signs early, it allows you to put all of your resources into those last elite recruits that you’re chasing.
