Ole Miss' Wiley arrested on domestic violence charge
OXFORD - True freshman Charles Wiley was arrested Monday evening on a domestic violence charge.
“We are aware of the situation and recognize the proper authorities are responsible for the matter,” coach Hugh Freeze said in a statement. “Charles is being withheld from all team activities while the process moves forward. We take incidents like this very seriously and will make decisions once the course of action is complete.”
A 21-year-old female, Legend Fultz, was also arrested at the same time by the same officer on the same charge. Both were bailed out slightly after 11 a.m. Tuesday and are scheduled to appear in municipal court next month.
The Rebels report for preseason camp Aug. 7 and begin practicing Aug. 8.
Wiley, 18, enrolled at Ole Miss in January and was a four-star recruit rated as the No. 20 weakside defensive end and No. 274 player overall, according to 247Sports’ Composite Rating. He chose the Rebels over offers from Alabama, Clemson and Notre Dame, among others.
The Stockbridge, Georgia, resident received praise from the Rebels' coaches for his athleticism, which allowed him to collect 34 ½ sacks and 89 tackles his final two seasons of high school.
"The sky's the limit for him,"
Stockbridge football coach Kevin Whitley told the Henry Herald in Georgia. "Charles is always going to get better. He'll keep learning. He's done it the right way. I really think he can play on Sundays, but again that would be determined by what he does over the next two or three years."
Defensive line coach Chris Kiffin indicated in spring workouts that the 6-foot-2, 253-pound Wiley would redshirt this season.
Junior Marquis Haynes and redshirt sophomore Victor Evans were listed as the first- and second-teamers at the position on the team's preseason depth chart. Haynes, a junior who'll turn 23 in December, could forgo his senior season after collecting 17 ½ sacks and 25 ½ tackles for loss over his first two year, meaning a starting role could be available in 2017.
“As you guys know, he’s kind of a combine freak — can run, jump, very explosive,” Kiffin said during spring workouts. “He’s just a little bit raw right now. He’s a quick learner. He’s not lost out there. He’s very talented. Charles is going to be a very special player.
“Charles is kind of feeling his way through right now, but when the light does go on, he’s going to be great. Charles is going to be a very good player for the Ole Miss Rebels one day.
