As soon as I saw this review, I knew this would happen. A white dude from Connecticut reviewing Hip-Hop? Blasphemy on this board.

Usually I can understand where Fantano comes from when he dislikes Hip-Hop albums (even Cancer 4 Cure, which I loved), and I can see all of the elements in the album that he dislikes, but I feel that he misses the point of why they're in the album by refusing to consider the context that it was created in. I mean, he gives it lip service, but he basically dismisses it as irrelevant in the next breath.

Basically, he exposed two of his worst biases as a reviewer without really stating them:

1). He doesn't like reading/listening to albums with consideration of the context that it was created in (which he at least stated that he didn't care for when he reviewed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy).

2). Let me quote something I wrote earlier this week:

Now, I don't exactly agree with all of this statement now (I wouldn't be as dogmatic about it, as I can easily see how this could honestly get less than an 8-equivalent from reviewers), but this review is Exhibit A of rating the concept of post-Illmatic Nas moreso than the actual music and concept of the album in question.

I don't want to write too much about it, since I want to discuss it a bit when I do my next album reviews.

This sums it up.

Let's not act like Gods Son wasn't also half a dud that got an enormous lift from a red hot, upstart 9th Wonder remixing it too.
This just shows what a box a lot of internet hip-hop heads live in. The majority of people who bought that album don't even know 9th Wonder remixed the album.

When all else fails the so and so is not a better MC than so and so statement comes into play.

It's incredibly dismissive and hugely disrespectful, all you have to say is that you don't like GFK like that, no need to shyt on him when GFK is one of the legit ill MC's.

I guess Nas is a better MC than Pharohe Monch and Redman while we are at it.

:what: What the fukk is wrong with some of you ultra-stans?

Did you not read me clearly state that Ghost is either my 2nd or 3rd favorite emcee of all time?

Did you not read me clearly state that Ghost is locked in a virtual tie for best solo discography of ANYBODY ever in my opinion?

But I'm shytting on Ghost and I "don't like him like that" because I said he's not a better emcee than Nas even though I said he's 2 or 3 all time as an emcee and his discography is 1 or 2 all time? :mindblown:

Somebody can be a better emcee than someone and not have a better discography. It's not that difficult a concept to grasp. Ras Kass is obviously a more talented emcee than Rick Ross, but his body of work isn't better than Rozay's.

Nas made 2 albums in a row filled with nothing but black empowerment and positive messages mixed with reflection...and u still shytted on em...its starting to seem like u just don't want Nas to make music anymore or somethin...real talk my g...I haven't seen u praise ONE Nas song not from his past...no matter the content..quality..message..etc...I understand u feel this way about him...u pointed out mistakes u feel he's made in the past..but what would u have him do...roll over and quit making music?..dude has been tryin to keep this hip hop shyt alive and give it diversity but u continuously give him slack for shyt he's done in the past...if u don't like his music that's cool..but all that other shyt is what it is my g...

dawg,...i already explained the bait and switch pr and cowardice of nas.

why do you continue to just ignore it.

nas was a leader.

the music he makes now is all follower based trash in abundance.

sprinkled with small twinges of his skill.

that is what you are missing.

nas even readily admits to borrowing when previously. he never neded to do that.

while around the likes of others and large professor of all people.

yet when he causes his own economic downfall.

from his own inability to meet showdates or properly manage his money.

fully knowing amd coming from the pedigree of artist.

fully welled and schooled in managing a record deal and royalties.

while on the lower drawing perspective.

instead of borrowing from them.

he sellout,..gives away the credible rubrick of emcee'n.

or ways of the chinese swordsman to wack katana wielding yakuza.

then,..attempts to revision history with hhid.

after singlehandidly scripting the largest detrimental and damaging sellout solo contribution to rap.

not in the way common did,..on a song about fatherhood[although eventually, com has sold out as well]. he creates the rubrick of jiggy and creates the most profitable solo submission and movement, singlehandidly from a solo perspective.

which allows emcees he looked up to, or looked up to him.

to nip and pick at his own legacy he disgraced.

which almost leads to his own downfall.

then after said defeat of his contemporary.

shuns and hides from additional battles and then in a conflict of admin interest.

of the highest order,..he then proceeds to hide his hands in the entire matter on hhid did.

plus records another wack record,...where he condescendingly, takes on the voice of chief dumbass quimby. wih an armful of donuts and a keg of duff beer.

yet i,..a real bboy who knows the truth.

i am supposed to just ignore all that bullshyt for fifteen years.

man,..fukk NO!!

i ain't goin!!

art barr

nas is the reason why thug nikkaz hate righteous nikkaz.

at the end of the day, they liken every dude spew'n knowledge.

as a phoney money hungry lyin ass punk bytch because of bytch ass activity like nas partakes in.

that nikka nas's activity marginalizes a real nikka like me,..fukk dude, to the utmost power culturally as a figure.

Dude shut up. I don't lie and desperately try to validate my "true hip-hoppa" credentials on the internet like you. Peoples Instinctive is one of my favorite albums of all time and I used to have the whole album memorized. Low End Theory too and Midnight Marauders and 3 Feet High And Rising and De La Soul Is Dead. Those albums got heavy rotation in my household.

I poked fun at your age because of your pathetic holier-than-thou "da 5 boroughs was bumping it in family whip!" posturing, sycophantically deifying a time period of rap so emotionally that you take an honest observation about albums that someone described as classics as a slight. It's the sort of prickly disposition you usually see from grumpy 40 year olds. If you really are my age that's even more pathetic. Lol@you talking about what was bumping in whips when you were riding a Huffy.

I rode Huffys when the Fat Boys were out. By the time Native dropped I was out and about. You shouldn't liken your life to mine. I'm certain we are very different.

Really? That was the project that pretty much exposed 9th to the public eye, wasn't it?
lol...9th Wonder still isn't in the public eye. Again, this is the message board box. Most rap fans don't even know who 9th Wonder is or just vaguely in passing. Nas fans and rap fans bought God's Son. God's Stepson had no impact whatsoever on the perception or sales of the album. Big Mel said it gave God's Son a huge lift. If anything, it probably convinced people who heard it that Nas' beat selection sucks, which would be more of a negative.

lol...you said you're younger than Kanye. Kanye is 35. So let's say you're 34 tops. 3 Feet High And Rising dropped in 89. That would put you at about 12 when it came out. You were on a Huffy or walking.
