In the history of music period I know people will have their own opinion on that and I don't mean to oversell it, but it's to be expected, that's what happens when you raise the bar and hit people with it straight out the gate.
But a lot of Nas fans seem slightly embarrassed by the fact that people seem to mention that.
And I bet they compare all his subsequent releases to Illmatic on the low.
I dead ass almost wish he never made it...shyt is gettin OLD...its been this same shyt since IWW dropped and its never let up...nikka has some of the best and worst fans of all time...

as far as the needle drop, i checked the review, and its obvious he wasn't feeling the album as much as illmatic. he gave it a 4 out of 10 and whatever man. i give his review 4 out of 10.

illmatic is the gift and the curse for Nas.
Without illmatic, though, you have no Nas. Straight up. That album is ingrained in his DNA. Those records personify him.
The fact that some people can't see anything beyond his debut is just something he has to live with and something his fans have to understand.
They are, of course, missing out because he's released a lot of amazing stuff since illmatic. But everybody has their own tastes and opinions on music. I don't really pay any attention to other people telling me that he's been wack since 1994.
With that said, he's not perfect. Several of his albums have been underwhelming. He's made and released his share of wack records, too.
No matter what, though, when you look at his full body of work, he'll go down as one of the illest rappers to pick up a mic.

Have you played Queens Story in your vehicle? It's almost devoid of low end. Just an observation as I was playing the cd that arrived today in the mail while driving. I hadn't played the album since leak night so this was round 2.
As for black bond, you don't see that as a spy vs. spy, James Bond type track? It sounds like a British 70s score. I happen to find it a little....white? Lacking soul? Non hip hop? My opinion.
Roses and Stay aren't muffin status? The chick on Roses sounds almost like that white chick from "i need a doctor'
