Why hasn't Cuban Linx had that same effect on Raekwon then? His next two albums were dud and were called just that. Now he's back.

Why didn't Criminal Minded forever curse Kris?

How was Rakim able to ever remove the shadow of Paid In Full?

Honestly, no one cares about Rakim or KRS anymore aside from hip-hop diehards. Trendy review sites dont even acknowledge them at all. You dont get hipster points for sh1tting on them or even remembering them so they dont bother.

Raekwon made a fantastic album with CL2 and won his praise fair and square. He was never as controversial and compelling to the media as Nas tho. Most people who know Rae, like Rae. His style is kind of unique and if he stays in his lane, hes cool. Nas is really polarizing and divisive and like others have said, people have different takes on what he is and what he SHOULD be

hold on.

yall clowning on big mel for supposedly hating on nas (while hes one of his favorite artists IIRC)

but arent yall doin the SAME THING hating on the guy who put together that pretty sound review ? (lets be real, race doesnt matter here, if he was black hed be called a c00n right off the bat) :wtf:

face it, even if you don't want to admit it here, admit it to yourself: the ONLY reason youre hating on that white hipster is because his opinion is DIFFERENT from yours.

so you nas stans (or any other artist stans) arent really qualified to talk about 'hate' and all, sorry brehs

it goes both ways. someone says something, and we have a discussion about it

no need for anyone to cry foul or play the victim

its double standards tho

if that hipster made the SAME exact review about a [non-nas] album nas stans felt was bad, he'd get the  with daps on having good reasons as to why it's bad.

the point is, the hate he got was only warranted of the album he reviewed, not the reasoning behind it.

and that is the sign of not being able to evaluate shyt objectively

Hipster is officially up there with hater as words that people toss at folks whose opinions they don't agree with.

The album was average/good. It's not sacrilegious to think that the majority of Nas' shyt has been forgettable.

it's a "double standard" if you don't agree with a critic all the time?

if you're talking about all the people that just want to call him a "hipster cac", I don't pay that no mind. and I'll point out that you just called him a "hipster"

Hipster is officially up there with hater as words that people toss at folks whose opinions they don't agree with.

Its definitely become a pejorative thats used loosely.

But theres kind of a weird phenomenon with these Pitchfork and Fantano reviews clashing with a lot of views on here and from really "hip-hop" centered publications.

You dont see XXL or HipHopDX reviewing Kate Bush or Sonic Youth albums, it would be kinda ridiculous no? Yet these primarily indie-oriented journalists review hip-hop albums like its nothing. Not just "artistes" like DOOM sh1t and Wu sh1t, but like Chief Keef and Gunplay shyt. Their credibility and intentions come into question as a result. If theyre reviewing every single indie act that has a 12 or an EP, why are they picking and choosing what hip-hop they review? or what punk or metal or trance sh1t they review?

Nas is screwed because hes a favorite to purists and traditionalists but hes also really popular and influential so hes on everyones radar. Hes easy fodder for indie critics as a result. Hes not fresh and new and working with the latest producers etc etc. He isnt esoteric or bizarre enough to be a critic darling either.

the black cat is my crown...
It's not sacrilegious to think that the majority of Nas' shyt has been forgettable.

it doesn't make sense to review an album from the standpoint of an artist's entire career being forgettable.. if the artist's career is entirely forgettable nobody would be looking forward to their next release and therefore no need to review the release...

look, michael jackson holds the record for the biggest selling studio album ever and it only sold 25M copies.. that means there were at least 200M people who didn't buy the album.. i'll assume a healthy chunk of them weren't that into mike's music... with that being said, NaS has never sold anywhere near those numbers, so obviously everyone doesn't like NaS - everyone didn't even like michael jackson.. the point is, be sensible in your criticism (btw, positive criticism is criticism too.. so i say the same thing to those who blindly praise this album as those who blindly hate it)..

just saying anything to shyt on an artist you don't like doesn't make your opinion worth paying attention to... the dude skipped over some very noteworthy NaS records to focus on hate me now and nastradamus... what about nas is like, a single from the same i am album as hate me now? what about project windows, one of NaS' best songs but on what is considered his worst album... what about God's son, street's disciple, etc? and why does every negative review of any NaS album have to mention illlmatic? that was 18 years ago... kids born in that year are preparing to become freshmen in collge now.. that's how long ago that was...

his review can be summed up pretty neatly by saying "this isn't illmatic, it sucks"... sorry, i don't respect that opinion... let me know when someone shyts on a jay-z album because it's not reasonable doubt...

um people on sohh and this board do it all tha time. I been lurkin for a while and some of yall nas stans were on that shyt too. I don't think anyone should be judged on their first album like that but don't act like a lot of people on this board don't hate jay z for the same thing. :wtb:

its a double standard to call someone out for supposed irrational 'hate' of nas while doing exactly the same thing- irrationally hating on a reviewer
