Aah I see. To me funk is a given. Can't really appreciate a lot of hip-hop if you don't have an ear for it, so I don't mind if it bleeds into soul and R&B occasionally. They're all so closely related that it's often unhelpful to make a distinction

I love hip hip, but to me when you're a singer you're held to a higher standard. Your voice should be crisp and distinct, that's why I love Maxwell. See, I love K-Ci and JoJo although they have that funky sound to me too.. It's just the person. I don't know, I'm weird when it comes to music I guess.

I dunno, distinct is a given but I feel crispness tends to be a matter of preference. While I'm sure we agree there's no absolutely correct way to sing I think I'm probably more willing to give a lot of leeway in that regard so long as the vocals complement the music.
