They were popular when they took over from either the euro colonials or terrible strongmen. Idi Amin was seen as a hero when he kicked the Brits out. Compaore ousted the murderous Sankara and people applauded :sadcam:
Tribalism remains the biggest internal problem in Africa. These countries were created arbitrarily by Euros, bringing together people who had nothing in common and asking them to be "patriotic" within artificial borders.
All these crazy wars breaking out in Africa stem from that shyt. Loyalty to your tribe is far more important than being patriotic (that applies to the political leaders too, hence the tensions).
Typically, Africans feel patriotic only when the national soccer team is playing :lolbron:

African states are no more artificial than Euro ones....Nationalism is always constructed and not something inherent. Modern nation-states as a concept didn't even exist till the 19th century.

It'll take stronger institutions to ensure elite competition doesn't devolve into zero sum politics.

Also murderous Sankara?? He was authoritarian but hardly among the most brutal dictators to use such a description. He retained popularity in BF and its why Compaore never admitted to ordering his murder. I think you got BF mixed up with another country.

Yeah, I got him mixed up with Obote.
There are so many of them, it's just sad how that continent got fukked up (externally and internally).
Strong institutions? African leaders still view the presidency like tribal chiefs, with all the corruption and biases that come with it. Nobody knows their salaries because, well, they own everything

We're talking about Mugabe here and the countless of other revolutionaries who became drunk with power after "liberating" their people. Africa is full of them, from Idi Amin to Mugabe and Bokassa, Bongo, Sassou-Nguesso, Museveni, Al-Bashir, Zenawi, Nguema, Ahidjo, Biya, Compaore (what a disappointment!), Mengistu Haile Maryam, etc etc etc
Nothing tells us that Lumumba would've bucked that trend.:stopitslime:

nothing tell us Lumumba would've bucked or followed that trend

There are religious individuals becoming drunk with power, but you still don't use that to solely discredit their religion, efforts, and their other motives that aimed at "righting a lot of wrong." You are pushing the euros agenda at summarizing these African nation leaders solely by their faults, while omitting their goals, successes, and the manufactured problems that they faced due to outside manipulation. You are also ignoring the socio-economical differences between black and whites in "successful" African nations who chose to be pawns for euro agenda

Too many folks [both black and non-black] are conditioned to always be eager to prove that the negatives done to black folks by other black folks, are worse than the negatives done to black folks by non-blacks. When the reality is that there is enough intelligence/rational reasoning/historical perspective and time to examine all negatives and address each accordingly. There is no need to try to use one negative to cancel/skew/undermine the efforts to point out another negative. This thread has nothing to do with Mugbe, but yet you felt compelled to bring him up

:blessed: he bit.

how is this not that important and even more important than mlk and x considering he was head of state?
even dr umar johnson considers this killing just as important as mlk and x as be stated in the color purple...

what assassination do you consider more important.... gaddafi's?
