No Mace wasn't. They should have taken the evidence, Chancellor Palpatine and Anakin's testimony to the Senate and had a trial. That is the Jedi way. The Senate didn't make the clone army just to fight off the separatists and Dooku. They created the clones just in case the Jedi tried to overthrow to pull a coup.......like Mace did.

i are a religious order they are not government. Some believe in the force and some don't. Some view the sith and Jedi as the same. Yoda trained Dooku. Dooku trained Qui Gon and Qui Gon trained Obi wan. The Senate was too concerned with the rise of a emperor Yoda that they did not fathom the rise of an Emperor Palpatine. Mace gave them a reason

The Jedi absolutely have a function in the Republic. The saga STARTS with Chancellor Valorun sending two Jedi to negotiate a peace treaty between The Naboo and the Trade Federation.

Mace going after Palpatine is 100% his job, not just as a Jedi but as a citizen. You're giving Palpatine a huge pass here when you think they could've held a fair trial. Was Anakin wrong for killing him in Return of the Jedi? Palpatine was still the leader of the Empire.

What they did made the Jedi order look suspect and they played right into Palpatines plans. Yoda told Mace his plan was skirting the dark side but he went along with it. If they did it Anakin's way then the Jedi council would not have been framed for Count Dookus actions. Palpatine played the fukk outta Mace and Yoda.

Palpatine was also using the dark side to cloud things in the force. Yoda even said he couldn't see the way things were going

Exactly that's why Anakin told them they'd be looking like they are trying to turn the republic into a jedi theocracy if they didn't do things the right way. Anakin by that time was a war hero renowned for his piloting. A Jedi knight and known for being close to two very powerful politicians Palpatine and Amidala. His testimony would carry weight. Why would Mace try to Arrest Palpatine with nothing on him. Palpatine was a beloved figure at the time. Mace was stupid as fukk for trying that.

Yeah, Mace was right, killing palp at this point wasn't really a major violation of Jedi ethics, considering palp just bodied a bunch of Jedi before the fight (that Anakin doesn't see) by refusing to be apprehended.

Palps was just manipulating Anakin the entire time, playing off his confusion and personal conflict (killing Dooku, feelings for Padame vs Jedi ethos). Palps set up the stage that way to push Anakin over the edge.
