I guess it depends on the artist's popularity. I'd say 1000 is fairly limited (unless we're talking about someone obscure, then it might just be all they pressed because they didn't anticipate selling many).

How many records are usually in a normal press? I have a record that 1 of 100 so I know that's super limited. I found out that another only had 1000 pressed. People have said that 500 is limited as well.

it really depends on the artist. domo genesis's mixtape got a limited 1000 pressing release and its still not sold out, but if kanye did 1000 shyt even 2000 pressings it would be sold out within a few days. some artists do it just for monetary purposes but some do it just to keep the demand high for future reissues.

Thanks for the information but I was talking strictly in terms of quantity, not demand. As in, what number would be considered a "normal" press and what would be "limited". Maybe I should ask a label or pressing plant to see what they say.

Alright.

Depends on the artist and the label. Some artists press the amount the can afford to press, or the amount their label is willing to invest in. When the Bad Brains put out their first single (granted, this was in the late 70s), they could only afford to get 500 pressed. Good luck finding it (EDIT -- there is one Bad Brains "pay to cum" 7" on ebay. Bidding starts at $50, which is way lower than i thought. Can't really tell if it's from the original pressing though).

But, other artists/labels deliberately release limited quantities of vinyl. Look at the Sub Pop Singles Club releases - there have been hundreds of them, but each is only pressed in quantities of a couple thousand or less. When some old punk band was picked to be the Singles Club release, that was fine -- but when it was Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr. or the White Stripes , those few thousand were gone much more quickly (and thus they are more valuable).

For a major artist on a major label, I would assume they'd press up over ten thousand or more, easy.

again it depends. the chronic, dark side of the moon, kind of blue, the black album will be pressed forever. but some indie artists can only afford to press out a few thousand. and then there are some big name artists who purposely press out a limited number.

there is no "normal." it depends if the release is limited, a big name release that will be pressed forever, an indie who can only afford ~2000, or an indie who limits pressing to a few hundred (check mista thug isolation on discogs)
