fellas, when it comes to putting air in your tires, do you go off of the reccommended psi that is on the door frame or do you go off of the psi number that is put on the actually tire

I was told today by a guy at discount tire, that I had too much air in my tire, the door frame says 35, my tires say 50 and I had about 45 psi in all my tires
