I don't get the complaints about the writing, it's amazing and better than 99% of the bullshyt you can find in gaming. I think the story is immersive, engaging, and told very well ( Good storytelling is still a big issue in gaming imo, even when the story has potential, it feels like developers still have a hard time of marrying game play with story, so pacing suffers or the plot is presented in a convoluted way ).The pacing is fantastic( it feels like the story and gameplay hits its peaks and valleys at just the right times, and it kept things from feeling monotonous )and Seattle is really fleshed out. Side quests and exploration always feels worth it because you either find something that develops the characters, or develops the in-game world in a meaningful way; It's in-game world building done right, and the developers that still make those shytty in-game quests where you have to kill 5 rats for a villager you just met should take notes. Also, I like how the story sets its self up for larger plot points or for other segments of the game, like l love how all the conflict in Seattle serves as a backdrop for Ellie's campaign, and then you're right in the thick of all that conflict once you start to play with Abby; It engaged me with her story right away, and gave me a reason to care for her campaign while the story develops Abby and the other characters, it's brilliant imo.
I think all the character's are great too, even if they aren't all likable, they're interesting and developed beyond common tropes at least. I think a lot of people are too hung up on Joel dying. I know it sucks to see a character you like die in such a gruesome way, but he had it coming tbh. It's starts Abby off from a position of un-likability, but i feel like as long as you can understand and empathize with a character's motives, you don't have to necessarily like that character to enjoy their story( I did grow to like Abby though, and Lev is my favorite in-game character). To keep it real I like that story doesn't make concessions for the characters and makes storytelling the priority. I beat this game in 4 days, and I can't remember the last game that compelled me to binge so much. Last of Us 2 is a 10/10 game for me, and I'm thinking about playing it again already.
