Found this which I feel perfectly explains the issue with Joel being killed off the way he was...
Again, the issue isn't that they killed him off, its HOW they killed him off...
Poorly written and poorly executed...

with all these incidents.... Joel was that guarded in his identity
and what makes it the most egregious, is these incidents happen before he committed his most notorious acts by killing a bunch of cults, scavengers leading all the way up to his destination by killing Marlene and a bunch of Fireflies

What I find funny about the #fukkJoel #TeamAbby crowd is; some of you were the same ones telling us how great the story and characters were in the first game.

You can have enjoyed the first game and its characters and still be ok with Joel getting his reckoning in the sequel
Actions don’t exist or happen in a vacuum. Especially in a violent post-apocalyptic world. That L was coming and he knew it. Dude said “say your rehearsed speech and let’s get this over with”. The game is the game
Also, Ellie has always been the crux and driving force of this franchise, I don’t know why brehs refer to Joel as the “main character”.

Abby‘s father did not have the right to take Ellie life and as Joel stepped into the operating room Abby father should’ve just backed off let Joel take Ellie and kept it fukking move-ing
he grabbed a shank put it in Joel face and the rest is history

When Ellie said "
Ok" it hit me that he probably fukked up their relationship big time (I didn't think I would ever actually see the ramifications tho ), but I was still too caught up in his POVIts not like he was going to just murder Ellie just to kill someone, he took out the only chance for the cure for selfish reasons of him not wanting to lose another daughter figure again.

This was the end of the last game so Joel had hella weapons, its not like he could've shot the guys leg off with a pump, he killed him in a murderous rage. The whole point of the game is that you just can't be killing people, especially when they know who you are as one of those unknowns might have someone who will want to do something about that.
Joel thought he was just killing soldiers and lost his life, Abby thought she just killed Joel and got her friends killed. Elie just wanted to kill Abby and got Jesse killed, lost Dina, her relationship with Tommy, and seemingly everything she loves. Everything has consequences, especially actions from rage.

With no actual reason to lie except that he was scared to lose his relationship with her. She was safe as far as he knew. He killed them all, and they were the ones who knew about Ellie. But to still lie after that showed me how weak and insecure he was. He deprived her of the right to know the truth, the truth that concerned her more than anybody else, just to safeguard her "love" for him. So fukking selfish. He didn't think about her; only himself.
Had he said: "We need to talk" I would have been like
But when he lied I was like
"look at you..."That was such a great ending
I loved arguing with folks about it too. Some dudes LOVE Joel, so no wonder they're heated when it comes to this game
