Neil originally worked on TLOU2 with Bruce (former game director at ND who worked on TLOU & UC4 w/ Neil) and a bunch of other people but over 70% of ND's developers left
Neil eventually got a new writer from Westworld who worked on the last season I believe and got new devs
A couple of years ago Neil went from saying they would do right by fans when Bruce was there to saying the story would divide the fanbase
Divide the fanbase it did
This tells me Neil went with his original revenge plot for TLOU, which was canned by Bruce, and that the original intended story for Part 2 was canned
Abby was a conception in Neil's mind for a while after that and he always wanted to tell a revenge story
He decided to experiment a bit with Part 2 with more of a overarching message (toll of revenge and forgiveness) and telling the other side via Abby
The leaks fukked up the surprise for many but they were inaccurate in fine details (e.g. Abby being trans)
There are who people love , people who were meh, and people who hate what Neil did
There is backlash w/ the typical
crowd who sent death threats and always complain about SJW this and that
But the backlash also includes people who did not like how the story is executed or are not impressed by the story

Like MGS2, Abby was never advertised like Raiden was never advertised and was a surprise
ND even replaced a scene w/ Jessie with Joel's character model
"You thought I was gonna make you do this on your own"
Joel dies within the first 30 min
You also play as Abby like you play as Raiden
But MGS2 doesn't have Raiden kill off Snake, especially in a controversial way that many people feel contradicts the character's tendencies (I'm Tommy, that's my brother Joel, sounds like you heard of us before?no shyt you killed the cure doctor and fukked the fireflies up. all the years of wisdom down the drain. went from saying don't give out your real name to giving out his social security number), then force you to play as Raiden for the rest of the game and most likely series.
There is also another part of the story I feel a way about but I don't want to spoil that

after finishing it based on your other comments, story def ain’t for everyone, but I’m happy you enjoyed it breh it’s a great game and picked apart way too much imo
