NY Hip Hop is definitely at a crossroads period. With dudes like Troy Ave, Bronson, Roc Marci, A$AP Mob, Chinx, Joey Badass, Mack Wilds starting to bubble a lil bit, the scene can go either way. It's going to be real interesting to see who steps up and if the fans really even care at this point.

Hip Hop is already in a transitional phase.

83/84 Had Run DMC establishing a Hip Hop identity

93/94 deaded the boom bap rap and socially conscious movements :to: for the hardcore street rap being the norm

03/04 Had...wait, it began the dark period of Hip Hop that we just climbing out of.

2013/2014 is playing out. Like you said, this can swing either way.

you guys are missing the point..........it's not just the artists that's the problem it's the lack of ENTERPRISING BOSSES and MOVEMENTS

the TUNNEL worked cause you had Peter G. who had put up the 5 million to purchase the tunnel along with his homie Micheal Caruso aka Lord Mike who formed alliances with groups such as the Wu Tang

promoters , managers and artists were on the same page..now is not the case

most bosses from NYC are making moves down south or in the Midwest, they are not centralizing or willing to just circulate the dollars in nyc....the internet and bosses like Diddy and Jay-z enterprise on an international basis

we live in a a gloabal economy.....STOP THINKING local and THINK GLOBAL..... chubbie baby, Lorenzo Nichols jr. (fat cat son), Jason geter are just a few of the NYC cats that MAKING MONEY and MAKING MOVES in hip hop isn't limited to the TRISTATE..

stop misleading yourselves into thinking this is some type of STIMULUS PACKAGE for NYC

it's not :manny:

it's just a NOSTALGIC EVENT documenting an era and landmark that made it's mark in HISTORY...

Oh, I totally agree 110%. The market for generating a dollar is WIDE open and has been like that for sometime. The days of being segregated to just NY or LA are long gone. I also agree that the hype so far is strictly off Nostalgic value. But when the Nostalgia wears off, we'll see if it goes anywhere or doesn't.

I love Roc Marci but it doesn't seem like his music or voice translates well live. I've only seen a couple vids of him live tho. He does have some tracks with hard drums like Emeralds or Snow that would work live, but others seem like they don't knock enough.

Just like strip clubs helped spawn a lot of shyt in the ATL, clubs did the same for NY. But strip clubs are still creating music styles whereas the NY club scene has been quiet. I definitely agree with you, this is a big opportunity to change things.

yeah but you also have to accommodate CHANGE....

I hear cats say "Yo son..STRIP CLUBS dominating today is just a SOUTHERN THING"....

no it isn't..IT'S A MAN THING!!...WHAT MAN DOESN'T LIKE SEEING NAKED WOMEN SHAKE A$$??

hell KAY SLAY sure didn't have a problem with it and he's been in the strip clubs and promoting big bootay byatches for over a decade now....

get use to it :manny:

then you hear..."all this dance music son is disgusting...what happen to boom bap ..dark beats"

Uhhh ...many of you 90's lovers fail to realize HIP HOP STARTED OFF AS A DANCE BASED GENRE as a result of mixing a disco athmosphere with deejays talking over obscure repetitive beats for B-BOYS to dance to....

then you hear..."yo everybody is about SIMPLE HOOKS ...ain't no lyrics"...

Uhh.........I wouldn't call GREG NICE , B-FATS and BIZMARKIE and MILK lyrcists.....and yet as simple as they were they were still respected as HIP HOP

the thing is HIP HOP is changing and a lot of cats haven't been able to accept it...because if they do it will validate that they are OLD AND IRRELEVENT...

hey guys don't be ashamed to wear the LARRY HOMES box fade :flabbynsick:

you might not be popular or the life of the party..but at least people HAVE TO RESPECT YOU AS A MAN....

and they WILL when they realize that when you are NOT SPENDING YOUR TIME trying to "come back" or "appeal to the youth" or keep "up with the kids"....

:comeon: nah I doubt that....im an old head myself....and most old heads who made it to this age will just reminisce over old homies whom didn't make it and how thankful they are to be alive and have kids and keep their jobs and a roof over their heads and just being grateful to experience HIP HOP in it's still pristine form...

I can imagine all the old heads shedding a tear over some pitchers of beer when "CAN IT BE ALL SO SIMPLE" by GHOSTFACE gets played on the speakers

"Let's talk about the good ole days..the good ole days...".."yeah let's talk about dem shyts" :noah:

I dunno my nikka..lol

The boxcutters might be washed off for this...

Some of these old school nikkas aint living right..Still

I doubt that bruh.....those old cats still trying to relive their gully days are WASHED UP and can't even afford to get in

and here's why...the TUNNEL wasn't CHEAP to get in...lots of ballers and bosses paid to get up in their...

I remember during holiday time like now the cover charge would inflate to as high as 70 bucks past midnight...

so any 30 plus year old now willing to spend more than 20 dollars at the door is NOT going to act a fool , cause he has a family and a lot t live for

nah..most of the bullshyt occurred outside.......I was living on 166th and Washington in the bx..and most cats didn't venture to the Tunnel or manhatten unless their bread was right

the violence was over sensationalized simply because people in that area of manhatten felt threatned by a large gathering of black kids

even the club owner Peter Gaiten said Sunday nights with flex was actually one of his most peaceful nights...

Any time you get two or three thousand people together, there are going to be some issues. But the amount of violence in the Tunnel was far less than when Madison Square Garden or the Meadowlands would do a Hot 97 [concert]. It was a nine-year run and nobody was ever killed in the place. The worst we had was a wheelchair guy got in with a gun and accidentally discharged the gun in his calf. There were fights, but it wasn’t like there were brawls every time, otherwise nobody would have gone, or it just would’ve ended up being just guys there. One of the reasons the night really worked well is because we used to get an extremely high ratio of females going.- PETER GAITEN the owner of the TUNNEL http://www.complex.com/pop-culture/2011/08/interview-peter-gatien-limelight

He is right it basically was more like a club for stunting..most of the crowd wanted to compete with the stars that was their..so it was a lot of flossing of chains and flexing for byatches....

I agree with all of that 100%.
But the strip club thing tho ill tell you in NYC was NOT as poppin or as commonplace as it is today. That stems from the south influence in the music and culture now. Years back when i was going to golden lady, wedge, passions , sues and other spots, it was just to see naked chicks and chill with the few of us who wanted to go. Chics and dudes alike would be like wtf you going to the strip club for? Yall wasting money, shyt is wack..now people in there like nothing.

Strip clubs ARE a south thing. ATL, MIA thats they shyt. With people going to MIA and ATL as chill spots and seeing hte culture and bringing it up here. Perfections, jaguars, starlets are now what the stip clubs in the south are. That came form them. Thats not NY shyt to be up in the strip club chillin like its a real club.

But like you said and i agree, times change. Glad im not one of those stuck in the 90s cats. Appreciate everything for what it is.
