Absolutely, my only wonder is if Meles did this knowingly or if he honestly wanted groups to have a chance at managing their own affairs. I think the former. Whether it can be scaled back depends on Abiy. I’m interested to see just how he resolved these tensions.

Akele Guzay on my moms side. They moved to Addis and helped build up the Piassa Neighborhood in the city.
I'm Akele Guzay too bro

Nice, I want to learn more but I haven’t found much out there.
Its not a tribe per se lol its just a previous region in Eritrea. They changed the regions in 1996 but people in the country still usually go by the old regions from what I have heard. If someone is "Akele guzay" it means that they are of the Tigrinya tribe and they trace their origin to Akele Guzay region. Like my dads side of the family is originally from Segeneyti so I am Akele Guzay. But the tribe is Tigrinya. Its the biggest tribe in Eritrea, about 55% of the population I think. Akele Guzay, Seraye and Hamasien is where all Tigrinya people can trace their origin to since it was always part of the Abyssinian empire. And those were the regions sold by Menelik to the Italians to weaken the Tigrean rule of the crown and also in exchange for weapons to conquer neighboring land.

Treaty of Wuchale (or, Treaty of Ucciale; in Italian, Trattato di Uccialli) was a treaty signed by King Menelik II of Shewa, later the Emperor of Ethiopia with Count Pietro Antonelli of Italy in the town of Wuchale, Ethiopia, on 2 May 1889. The treaty stated that the regions of Bogos, Hamasien, Akkele Guzay, and Serae were part of the Italian colony of Eritrea and is the origin of the Italian colony and modern state of Eritrea. Per the Treaty, Italy promised financial assistance and military supplies.

Not saying they are right but that is kinda the justification Oromos are using, saying current Ethiopia is "a jumbo sized Amhara" and "Ethiopianism" is just a codeword for adopting to amhara culture and suppressing your own tribe/culture/history. Jawar Mohamed fueling the fire calling the inhabitants of Addis "Menelik settlers". Since Addis is in the Oromo region they are saying they have historic claim to it. Are you amhara?
Menelik settlers :russ: Jawar is a huge troll.

I remember when brehs on Horn forums (Somali, Ethiopian etc) used to make fun of Oromo seperatist types for being under the boot of TPLF despite their population size. The tables have turned blindingly fast :francis:

The Oromos may have a point about Ethiopianism, but so far they havent articulated a clear alternative that more than one group can buy into. On the ground, it seems the activist/mob on the street is motivated by ethnic supremacy. The conflicts have been all over the spectrum: Somali region, Harar, Southern region etc.

Now I see why I couldn’t find much. What I remember being told was that my great great grandparents were merchants that left when the Italians arrived. I’d also read that Akele Guzay was a leading region in Eritrea.

I agree they definitely have a point about Ethiopianism. And I feel as though they are an important part of the discussion because I myself have never been enamored with the over-Habeshaing of Ethiopian Culture. It’s just that like you said, they haven’t provided a worthy alternative to challenge it. It’s a true show of ignorance or arrogance to repeat the same mistakes your former oppressors made.

Edit: On another note tho, seeing Djibouti and Eritrea working on their issues brings an idea I’ve had for awhile. What do y’all think about desalination plants on the Horn coast, and water pipelines from the coast into the arid parts of the interior. I’ve always felt this could be a great way to help regions like Afar and Ogaden from potential droughts. I love the idea as part of a longer infrastructure project to bring some environmental stability and help people on the ground find good pastures or river sides worthy of agriculture.

It honestly pisses me off sometimes that through all the political fukkery we can’t implement real ideas to help the people.

Ethiopian investors and civilians are coming to Eritrea in droves, walking around freely enjoying the fruits of the peace treaty and open border. Meanwhile, Eritreans are still killed, jailed or fleeing the country living in exile. Why is landlocked Ethiopia planning on building a navy?
It's over. We're getting annexed :mjplsno: Guess Isaias masterplan is finally coming into fruition.

We are faaaaamii-lyyyyy, got my haftays and my haways wit me.....:mjcry:

Wars, lack of regional cooperation, no political will, those areas are also considered the badlands of the region with roving gangs of bandits.

But projects like that would go a long way in bringing stability to the region.

I said it kinda sarcastically but some people say he always been a unionist and even suggested to have some type of federation deal or something with ethiopia in the mid 90s or something. He is half ethiopian after all :manny: Dude on some trojan horse shyt sabotaging Eritrea from within. Honestly I dont know wtf he's doing, feels like he lost his marbles and is just doing whatever he can to stay in power.

Lol, there’s enough halfies between us to make an extra province. :pachaha:

I think Isaias would be assassinated before all that ever happened. I find it hard to believe that after almost 3 decades of such rhetoric and propaganda that a union would be possible. Yet in a strange way, it would definitely bring everything full circle since it was the federal union and Selassie dissolving it that started everything to begin with.

How ironic if Isaias was the one to fix that historical mistake. I’m definitely hittin up Mitsuwa next year either way.
