With all this Chinese money going to the Horn, will these Horn countries get together and cooperatively spend the money wisely? For developmental purposes?
We will have to wait and see. The Somali government is very corrupt while both Djibouti and Eritrea have incompetent dictators. The only government that might correctly use the Chinese money is Abiy's Ethiopia.

It seems that he's the hope for not only Ethiopia but the Horn as well. :lupe:

My dad remembers the Chinese workers that built the road between Galkacyo to Burco. Said they were provincial as hell, never been anywhere else. Somalis were mystified by their diets.

Both my parents remember the Chinese. My mom said there were some in Hargeysa building the roads and then my dad was in Xamar and saw them build the stadium and national theatre.

My dad says they picked up Somali fast.. and a few married Somali women, knew one guy who changed his name to Jamac :heh:

Djibouti hails 'new era' of ties with foe Eritrea

Djibouti on Thursday hailed a new era in its relations with rival Eritrea, whose foreign minister paid a surprise visit to the country as part of a regional bid to soothe tensions between the neighbours.

The two small Horn of Africa nations have been at loggerheads for decades over the disputed border region of Doumeira, and clashes erupted in 2008. Qatar brokered a peace deal in 2010 but relations have remained strained.

Djiboutian Foreign Minister Mahamoud Ali Youssouf said his Eritrean counterpart Osman Saleh was visiting to "open a new era in relations between our two countries. Now it is the time for peace".

"Today the message that we have for the Djiboutian people, the Eritrean people and all in the region, is that the Horn of Africa is heading towards peace."

Are they known for stoking African disunity? :wtb:

They and other middle eastern heavyweights have a particular interest in the Horn currently. UAE in particular has been engaging heavily with Ethiopia and Eritrea and were pushing for reconciliation between the two. They obviously have their own agenda.

They are also opposed to the Somali and Djibouti govts.

Crazy

I’m liking the way things are progressing

However knowing that UAE is in the cut has me cautious

The Somali government will eventually reconcile with the UAE. There's probably already talks behind the scenes. I'd be surprised if they haven't been pushing for these talks between all four countries.

I'm guessing now with the Turkish economy taking a massive hit, the Somali government is looking for more reliable partners. :francis:

Its interesting, it seems like its Djibouti making the major concessions here and its probably because they dont have a choice. Their position has always been that the border dispute should be settled by international ruling and Eritrea has resisted this because they know they'd lose. I dont see Eritrea agreeing to those terms in these statements.

They've managed to overlap Djibouti by getting on board with the Gulf and normalizing ties with Ethiopia ( and the States behind the scenes). Djibouti on the other end, probably foresaw itself being left in the cold in these developments and decided to cut its losses. Interested to see how their negotaitions develop on the border issue.

.

Farmaajo met with Sisi last week in China and now this .The UAE and Saudi dominate the Arab League nowadays, this wouldnt have happened without the formers say.

The reconciliation is coming, its just a matter of how and when.

I think it's in Somalia's interest not to make an enemy out of the UAE but to also not get too close to them because that would anger Turkey (our closest ally). Ethiopia and Eritrea will help Djibouti and Somalia reconcile with the UAE sooner than later.

Strategically this is a good move. It's better than having the country/region torn to pieces by different allegiances. It will be interesting to see how the government manages its ties with
Qatar/Turkey :francis:

Saudi/UAE already back some of the federal States as well as Ethiopia and Eritrea.

I foresee fewer attacks by Shabaab in the future as well (if the rumors of Saudi backing are true):mjlol:

Turkey is becoming increasingly isolated geopolitically so I'm not sure its even wise to rely solely on them at this point :francis:

Can't put all our eggs in the turkey/Qatar basket.
