I just finished reading this

:wow::wow:

Dude randomly namedropping Gramsci and Bismarck's Germany in a convo to make his case. Somali warlords never stood a chance :picard:

I didn't realise he was this smart. I knew he was very shrewd politically but the guy sounds like a scholar academically.
De Waal's analysis in the second half of the paper is also very interesting. One of the few original scholars on the region, that always has insight that moves above the mundane.

After the Ethiopian Civil War, a lot of Ethiopian leaders went abroad or took correspondence courses to learn about the world and modern economics. Zenawi was always smart though. I think he wanted to be a doctor prior to him joining the TPLF.

In contrast, most other regions of Africa don't have a foreign scholars like de Waal. Maybe Southern Africa but I doubt anyone up to his calibre is examining North or West Africa. Arguably, you could say that Gerard Prunier has done excellent work on Central Africa but his primary focus (and love) is the Horn.

Norfeast groovin…
@thatknickfan @The Odum of Ala Igbo

It seems that some Oromos have become emboldened by Abiy becoming the PM. They are driving the Gedeo people (never heard of them before) out of their lands.

There's also ethnic conflict between the Sidama and Wolayta.

Not to mention the Somali/Oromo beef in Eastern Ethiopia.

Ethnic unrest tarnishes new Ethiopian leader's reforms

This is what you were saying @2Quik4UHoes

Yup, Zenawi was smart but I sometimes wonder if this setup was a miscalculation on his part or if he sought to Balkanize the rest of the country while strengthening Tigray? Somewhat follows the old British plans after WWII to split Ethiopia into pieces.

Either way, I can’t take Ethiopian politics seriously until this is addressed. Sad to say, but my people would rather believe that leadership is some divine right from God rather than it being influenced by actions on the ground by the people based on shared principles and morals. Like I’ve said, a lot of these new Abiy stans were staunchly against the govt, makes me sick they could be so easily swayed. The day my people stop waiting for God and use some intellect is the day Ethiopia might truly turn the corner.

Btw, I had a good feeling this thread was gon be nice. @thatknickfan the Thin Red Line series was amazing! Finishing up De Waal too, very impressive shyt.:ohlawd:

With all this Chinese money going to the Horn, will these Horn countries get together and cooperatively spend the money wisely? For developmental purposes?

Ministers to discuss Djibouti and Eritrea border row

Foreign ministers from Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia arrived in Djibouti Thursday to initiate talks on the resolution of the border dispute between Asmara and the host nation.

The delegation will consult with Djibouti on how to resolve the border conflict with Eritrea peacefully…We want to make the region to be free from war and become peaceful,” said Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who spoke about his visit to Asmara upon arrival in Addis Ababa.

The sending of the ministerial delegations follows the agreement signed by the heads of state of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somalia on Wednesday.

Djibouti and Eritrea have been in dispute over the Doumeira mountain and island, which the former claims were being illegally occupied by Asmara

War in the Horn of Africa May Be on the Horizon for the U.S.

War in the Horn of Africa May Be on the Horizon for the U.S.

I doubt that this will happen since the US has a vested interest in backing the Federal government.

However, there have been recent reports that ISIS might be looking to establish itself in the Horn - which sounds mighty convenient :patrice:
Terrible, crackpot article. Conspiratorial ravings on the left are the worst source for any foreign policy news.
