this is a interesting topic. This is similar to what is happening in Midtown Detroit only thing is here its totally embraced. The Hipsters are of all races here so the culture aspect is actually AMPLIFIED. So while over in woodbridge you have pubs and lil hipster murals, over on Cass you have the Islamic Center, and all of this is around the way from the African American History museum and Wayne State University.

Even the shops popping up are different, its like the WANTED it to be like BK but instead its becoming this odd hodgepodge. South Asia Marts, Arabic Marts, a place to get reall good crepes.

I think the difference is that Detroit doesn't have that "i have to go here to MAKE IT" allure that NY has. People in Detroit fukk with Detroit because they are already here, and thus have SOME (and i do mean SOME) level of familiarity and authenticity.

I think it speaks to the nature of how the rest of the country views NY. All the films about making it there haven't helped ya'll. Hate to say it but the Hollywood/Broadway did this to ya'll.

Think of a more generic Gentrification.

Multiple Starbucks, Gym, Yoga, Organic Food, Banks and more chain stores everywhere.

The Ethnicity is being taken out.

There is a certain attitude about NYC or there was at one time, and it wasn't because of high crime rates. But this need breed of transplants over the past 10-15 years having slowly been killing off that attitude. And it isn't just black neighborhoods. Look at Astoria, historically a Greek neighborhood is changing as well. I see changes from just 5 years ago. Another neighborhood I see changing soon is Ridgewood. A large Eastern European population in that neighborhood. But with all those all fashioned apartments and the L & M lines right there, that will change as well.

Okay, and why is this a bad things?

Sounds like I need to look into moving to Bedford-Stuyvesant

Like I said there is a certain culture and attitude that made NYC special, that something special that made people want to come to NYC. Truth be told it's an attitude you don't notice of appreciate if you weren't raised here That has been dying off, proof is in the arts. So many areas where NY was at the forefront of musical and artistic endeavors. That attitude is the reason NY was at the forefront of doowop, punk, rap, and house music. Like I said it's that attitude and if you're not from here odds are you won't get it.

Yeah, i see the irritation. The ethnic hoods are what made NYC, NYC to begin with.

However, to play devil's advocate, could one argue that this is what the next logical step is? I mean for decades NYC was plagued with crime, drugs and general unhappiness. With these Hipsters moving in it seems those negative elements are being reduced. SO I ask why aren't more native New Yorkers on board with such positive changes. Sure the fashion is bizarre and the dudes a passive aggressive putzes but murders gone down, property values up, more food banks and programs.

If one had the ability to participate in these changes why not? They seem to be making NYC a bit more of a sunny place to live in. And the chain store element can be eliminated with proper market projections. If i had the bread im opening a second hand clothing store in BK with the quickness.

just wondering

Lemme tell ya somethin....i still have a hard time bein around dese kinda mufukkas. :beli:

I've always felt like i was just a nikka from da block who just so happened to have gotten zapped wit artistic powas and dese hipster fukks are really nothin new to me. Been dealin wit dese kinda false flaggin (poor (when in reality ya well off)) lames mah entire life.

I stay wit da :rudy: :aicmon: faces whenever I engage in conversations wit dese folks.

But like some other posters have stated....dem hipster bishes are extremely gullible. :mjpls:

Capitalism brehs, it happened

Money talks

And low key, a lot of the landlords with hipster tenants in places like Bedstuy and Crown Heights are black... when I was in CH there was a white lesbian couple upstairs and a bunch of NYU dudes downstairs... all white.... our landlord was a black female lawyer

If we got our money up we could have bought and kept our neighborhoods sealed... but for whatever reasons we didn't/couldn't....

A lot of these folks are not "hipsters" either, they are just young folks who got priced out of Manhattan. Do you really think if people could afford to live among people like them who want them around they would choose to live in a neighborhood that's dangerous and full of people who are not like them and don't want them there? nikkas dont think

But why are black people selling their homes and stores to these hipsters? Are there black hipsters?
First of all most don't own the homes or stores, rent goes up and they dont have a sound back-up plan or adapt to new trends, i do not get the hipster hate, people not doing crime is a bad thing now? This is a big problem, we don't adapt at all, some do and thrive like my man Miguel Garcia, he has a hat factory sell black hats to the hasidic people in BK, Cake Man is still there doing well, blame Tish James, she is biggest cause of black owned businesses closing, but we don't want to blame her do we?

that was what i was trying to get at. The culture here in the D, people getting on board with that shyt. all races. nikka better get it together and realize that this racial shyt is on its way out the door once the last remaining baby boomers die out and leave office.

Gen X and Y just dont see shyt that way

Agreed to the fullest, we hold on to the past so long, we get passed over, spanish getting their act together and passing us by, those shows on spanish tv have loyal followers and they are stressing education and they stick together and support each other, not all but the majority of them see the big picture, we have to do this also and soon.

Its so much $$$$ to be made off these folks, literally

But people wanna bytch and moan

I think the most glaring example I saw of the upside of these folks moving in was... my first place in BK had a methadone clinic across the street. They did some developing and eventually knocked the shyt down and put up a grocery store

nikkas need to stop crying and get this money... Im on another message board for people moving into those neighborhoods... "if you build it they will buy from you"

Is gentrification evil when your grandmother can sell her house in Bushwick for 900,000?

Lol no way! A lot of people are getting a payday off this, good for them... They weathered the storm and deserve it! A lot of people have been waiting 30-50 years for their neighborhood to improve
And guess where she's moving when she gets that 900? Down South.

Meaning minority families are LEAVING their communities, not generating wealth in those communities, and thus it's not really a community anymore is it?
