I'm not sure people really understand what a big difference 3 or 4 miles per hour makes in baseball.

90 mph is tough to hit if it has movement.
95 is very hard.
97 is...I mean shyt. I remember Armando Benitez throwing 97-98 back in the day and that looked impossible.
100...101 mph? At that point, you're 100% guessing. There's just no way. You gotta hope for little or no movement.

For Chapman to throw that hard...and he's been doing it for years...it's a modern miracle.

Interesting point you make about the speed of the ball. I was thinking of the power and timing it take to homer the ball into the stands.

It doesn't matter how hard one throws, if there's no movement. :comeon: That's the key.

I've seen many "hard throwers" get torched, including Benitez's dumb ass.

It does matter how hard one throws.

It's just not the only thing.

Location.
Change of speed.
Movement.

In that order.

nikka, what do you think movement is? :what:

And instead of location, you actually mean precision. :comeon:

Speed is very much over-rated. You'll notice that most pitchers in the HoF aren't Nolan Ryan or Roger Clemens.

There are no great 87 mph pitchers.
Speed matters.

change of speed and movement are not the same.
When Pedro Martinez hit them with 96 on the corner, and then dropped the change up at 84....THAT'S what made him elite.

I don't care how much "movement" you think a pitcher can have....it's about changing speeds.

Tim Wakefield had a ton more movement than Cliff Lee. And Tim Wakefield wasn't half the pitcher Cliff Lee was.

You've got nerve. Comparing a knuckleballer, like Tim Wakefield, to Cliff Lee. :stopitslime:

And no speed doesn't matter if you know how to PITCH! Hitting the low to mid 90s is all one needs to be high profile pitcher, as long as you know to pitch. :ehh:

If all you do is throw in the high 90s/100s and nothing else, you'll be figured out soon enough.

And if all you do is throw 86 mph with sweeping sliders, you'll get crushed.

I guarantee you that if you set up a pitching machine throwing 100 mph...and 20 feet away you had a guy throwing wiffle balls at you.... you would be far, far more successful playing wiffle ball.

I sure hope that you are being deliberately obtuse because if not....:dame:

ONCE AGAIN, speed matters but only to a certain degree. Yes, there is a threshold that all pitchers should meet in order to be successful (unless you throw junk) - and that threshold is usually in the low 90s.

Many people are taken by someone who throws in the high 90s/100 but being a hard thrower can only take you so far if AGAIN, you don't know how to pitch. Yes, throwing 100 mph can hide many of your inadequacies as a pitcher but only for so long. It doesn't matter how hard you can throw, if your FB is as straight as an arrow, any major league hitter is hitting that shyt to the seats.

You're a dumbass:mjlol: Cavs fans don't even fukk with you. I never saw you in the season thread. And why wouldn't Cavs fans support the tribe? They're both play in the city of CLEVELAND:bryan:

:russell: Speak for yourself.

My daps in the NBA playoff threads beg to differ. :ld:

I don't watch the regular season of any sport and so. :stopitslime:

I can point to 10 times as many trash pitchers who throw 90 mph, than ones who throw 98 mph.

It's exceedingly rare to throw into the upper 90s with any consistency. And it's valuable.
Armando Benitez wasn't a bad pitcher because he threw the ball straight. He was bad (if you can even call him that) because he walked batters.

For his career, batters hit .195 against Benitez.
.195 !!

How many 91 mph pitchers claim that shyt?
