We had Kyle Farnsworth and i remember them bigging him up as the next hard hitter in the cubs starting rotation, but again, like buddy over here is pointing out, his speed didn't mean sh*t because his fast ball had no movement and his slider wasn't as sharp. That's why he got demoted to the bullpen immediately after. Even then he was struggling as a reliever having a few breakout moments here and there but it all goes back to what he said. If you don't have precise control (because this dude was king of wild pitches and walked far too many) then you really can kick rocks throwing straight fireballs. There's a reason why Maddux had the career he had (movement movement movement) and Hendricks is following that same formula (his fastball is 89) location and knowledge of pitching is everything in this league more so than the overrated 100mph everyone glamours about.
THAT'S NOT THE POINT!!

The point is that that thing...she..he...whatever...is trying to act like Chapman throwing 101 doesn't matter then brings up Kyle Farnsworth and Armando Benitez....two pitchers with good 15 year careers, in large part because their velocity was troubling for hitters.

There is literally no one who can point to successful relief pitchers who don't throw hard.
None.

Eckersley, Rivera, Hoffman, Chapman, Wagner....go on down the list.

They ALL threw/throw hard.
Because...AND I STATED THIS IN MY VERY FIRST POST ABOUT IT.....while velocity isn't the end-all, be-all...it matters.

nikka, you're the one who compared Chapman to Benitez. :what: And that's where your ass lost all credibility. :comeon:

I'm a fan of Aroldis. :yeshrug:

EDIT: This nikka did not just name check Trevor Hoffman and Billy Wagner. :deadmanny:

I compared Chapman to Benitez in the sense that both hit the upper 90s with their pitches and have been nearly impossible to hit. And the statistics prove it.

What's your problem?
You think anybody would rather face Aroldis Chapman rather than Kyle Hendricks? Regardless of who you may think is the better pitcher... :dahell:

you're right to SOME DEGREE. Rivera, Wagner, Hoffman ALL had a second and third pitch to mask their fastball and make it even more effective. Mariano had Cutters (again movement is key) Wagner had a NASSSTYYY Slider which set up the fastball even properly :blessed:, Hoffman had a great change up, a slider as well and movement on his fb. I'm a cubs fan to die for but i'm not gonna be biased with Chapman. In the middle of some of these playoff games, there was no middle ground with him, he was either K'ing mothaf*ckas or getting ROCKED! Why?? he didn't have any other pitch! You see as recent as a few games ago, he finally starting throwing his change up and i was telling my buddies from the start, if Chapman would just develop a changeup, dude would be un hittable! :whoo:

So guess what the pitching coaches are doing as we speak?? giving him an quick 101 on changing speeds, cuz hard throwing fastball pitchers can only pretend for so long, that's why my mans was able to get out of those tough ass 2 and 2/3rds crucial innings. These indians weren't expecting a CHANGE UP, much less at 89 from "THE ALMIGHTY CHAPMAN", they froze on the spot or swung too early :merchant:. Let Chapman develop the change up even more and the league should be scared as sh*t to what this hybrid can do :pachaha:.

Every great hard throwing pitcher, at least in the reliever sense, has had 2-3 other pitches he would use whenever batters wanted to play funny ball and think it was batting practice out there :martin:

Did I not say in a post earlier that

1. Location
2. Changing speeds ??

Do I have to fukkin quote myself on it?

:skip:

For all the shyt that people talk about Chapman being a 1 trick pony...batters are hitting .155 off him for his CAREER.
There's just no way that happens if he's throwing 90.
No fukkin way.

also pointing out, even if he didn't have anything else, hitting a 102 mph fb is as tough as anything in this world, instead of the average .04 to react, with him it's .03 seconds. I won't ever take away him being a special one of a kind pitcher cuz seriously who's consistent with the 100mph fbs each pitch? :lolbron:

but even then you do need another one to make those 100mph fbs look 120 from a hitter's eye :whoo:
