I can point to 10 times as many trash pitchers who throw 90 mph, than ones who throw 98 mph.

It's exceedingly rare to throw into the upper 90s with any consistency. And it's valuable.
Armando Benitez wasn't a bad pitcher because he threw the ball straight. He was bad (if you can even call him that) because he walked batters.

For his career, batters hit .195 against Benitez.
.195 !!

How many 91 mph pitchers claim that shyt?

:jbhmm:

nikka, thanks for partially proving my point. :heh:

And as a fellow Yankee fan, I only got two words for you: Kyle Farnsworth.

What are you even talking about?

You're acting like speed doesn't matter and pointed to Benitez....a guy with a 15 year career and a sub-.200 BAA.
You think he was gonna do that shyt throwing 92?

:what:

Velocity matters for pitching.
I explicitly said it wasn't the single most important thing.

So really, what are you even arguing?

And did you even watch Farnsworth pitch? He lasted 16 years in the bigs. Dude had some of the nastiest movement in the league with his slider. But he also threw 97-98. You think that slider would have been effective if his FB was 91 and his slider was 86?

:what:

You disingenuous, lying piece of shyt. I am a baseball above all else and I am very well aware that the CLEVELAND Indians are from Ohio. I never said that I didn't know why Cavs fans were rooting for them much more so that we are now on opposite sides. And furthermore, I posted all through the playoffs.

Anyway, I'm done talking to your wack ass. It's no surprise that you're a part of the lame ass TPC. Worst and most pathetic internet gang of all time.

Benitez's career ERA and WHIP?

3.13 and 1.217

I know. Terrible.
:russ:
Actually, for a relief pitcher (pitching predominately in the fukking NATIONAL LEAGUE), yeah, those numbers are pretty horrible...especially that WHIP.

Elite pitchers have <1 WHIPS.:umad:

And :dead: at you trying to hype up Kyle Farnsworth. Yes, I've had the displeasure of watching him and his 4+ ERA blow games "pitch" countless times.

Damn. And less than 300 SAVES. :dead::mjlol:

Good lord you're retarded.
Who said anything about Farnsworth and Benitez being elite?
They were good pitchers with good, long careers who threw hard.

The absolutely would be worse if they threw 91 mph.

We had Kyle Farnsworth and i remember them bigging him up as the next hard hitter in the cubs starting rotation, but again, like buddy over here is pointing out, his speed didn't mean sh*t because his fast ball had no movement and his slider wasn't as sharp. That's why he got demoted to the bullpen immediately after. Even then he was struggling as a reliever having a few breakout moments here and there but it all goes back to what he said. If you don't have precise control (because this dude was king of wild pitches and walked far too many) then you really can kick rocks throwing straight fireballs. There's a reason why Maddux had the career he had (movement movement movement) and Hendricks is following that same formula (his fastball is 89) location and knowledge of pitching is everything in this league more so than the overrated 100mph everyone glamours about.

:dame:

And for the record, a lot of garbage players have long careers, especially "hard throwers" because some dumb ass pitching coach always thinks they'll be the one to "fix" them. Even head case Dontrelle Willis was given MANY chances.
